SIXTEEN YEARS: From refugee camp to the Chancellor's desk

1956. A married couple cross into West Germany and register as refugees.

They settled in Frankfurt, opened a small business and joined a political party. Both had been sent by East German intelligence, whose method was patience: place people young and wait for them to rise. By 1972 Gunter Guillaume was a personal assistant to Chancellor W***y Brandt, reading his correspondence with NATO leaders. Old radio traffic gave him away.

THE INVENTOR

The device was designed by Leon Theremin, the same man who invented the electronic musical instrument that carries his name, while he was working in a Soviet prison laboratory. A passive resonant cavity with a thin diaphragm, energised only by an outside beam, it is regarded today as a predecessor of RFID. The tag on your shop purchases is its descendant.

THE GIFT: From schoolchildren. It listened for seven years.

1945. Moscow. Soviet schoolchildren give the American ambassador a carved wooden gift.

The carved Great Seal hung in the ambassador's study at Spaso House. Inside it was a listening device with no battery and no wires, dead until a radio beam was aimed at the building from outside. It hung there through four ambassadors and seven years of private conversations, and was found only when a British operator stumbled onto American voices.

She never denied taking the twenty thousand francs. She said it was compensation for property the Germans had seized from her, and no evidence has ever established that she did anything for the money. The court that convicted her sat closed. Historians read the Madrid messages as Berlin deliberately burning an agent it no longer wanted.
