Ahead of tonight's show of Summer Pearl we wrote a piece covering the musical journey of this exquisite rising voice.

Freedom is an overused word in music writing, though it's appropriate here because it describes the inherent structure in her work. Her songs don't sit still for very long, moving through jazz, dub, soul, and hip-hop. By the time she had reached stages at Jazz Re:freshed, Montreux Jazz Festival, Cully Jazz, and the London Jazz Festival, Summer Pearl was steadily building a career that held intimacy, groove, and inheritance within the same frame.

Ahead of today’s show at Control Club, we got the chance to review the upcoming 6-track album of Bel Cobain - Kizzy, dropping April 24 at Brownswood Recordings.

The record derives its title from Cobain’s dog, who passed away just as the project approached the finish line. This bereavement, coupled with a year and a half of sofa-surfing and the slow-motion dissolution of various relationships, provides the melodically rich EP’s bones. Yet Cobain successfully bypasses the tropes of the modern trauma narrative. She refuses to use her grief as a play for sympathy. To her, music is life interrupting itself; it’s a space where the melody struggles to stay whole under the heavy pressure of a world in chaos.

This refusal to aestheticise pain constitutes the EP’s defining ethic. At one point, she mutters that she is finished with wiping dry eyes—a late decision spoken after too many rehearsals. It is a total rejection of the societal expectation that a woman’s suffering must be rendered in a shape that is palatable or easy to consume.

We ended this year in great style and fashion with the latest Black Rhino residency at Control Club this weekend. With a music selection brought by Indica Dubs w/ Danman, Bukkha, Anin & Drao, the dancefloor resonated once again with sub frequencies amplified by Riddim Bandits sound system.

❤️ All hats off to all the dancers who accompanied us in this 23rd residency and who took their time while we have built a community driven by principles of freedom and sonic exploration.
