We haven't been on Facebook for a while, but we have been posting fairly regularly on the Hey Cluj website. We recommend the town tours, the botanical gardens, and we tried a new technique to improve our language skills.

Whether you are a student, a tourist, an expat, or a local, you could learn something with the Free Cluj Tours. Tours are conducted in English, even though the tour guides (and many of the tourists) are Romanian. You will learn a few Romanian words along the way, perhaps the name of that instrument....

Happy Romanian Language Day. La mulți ani limbii Române. We have some new articles in English on our website. Maybe next year there will be a Romanian version.

Events Rroma film festival in Brasov August 29, 2023 Entertainment Reporter We missed the festivals in Cluj. Actually, we did see some but haven’t reported on them. Yet. Anyway, Brasov, one of Romania’s and Transilvania’s most interesting cities, is holding a…

prices at Cluj Airport are catching up with Europe, and perhaps have even surpassed most airports on the continent. Seven euros for a bar of chocolate? Really?

We all know that things are more expensive at the airport, but seven euros for a box of chocolates? Yes, we heard that is the case. Not a specific brand of chocolates, not a box, just a bar with Dracula on it. I don’t think they are that expensive even in the airports in Belgium or Switzerland. At...

What is our favorite film at the Transylvania International Film Festival so far? Is it a retrospective, one with a celebrity guest, a big budget history film?
Not this year, sorry. This year, the best film seems to have been made by a local masters student. Perhaps there is hope for the future of cinema after all.

From the description, I did not realise that Blue Planet (Planeta Albastră) was a documentary. Nor did I realise that it was made in Cluj. From the questions after the show, and the closing titles, everyone could see that not only was it a great advertisement for a band, but it was also a great one...

What is the most copied joke in Romanian newspapers? Which joke should every Romanian know by heart by now? Which joke could help you learn the language, integrate into society, and improve your happiness by 0.032 percent a day?
Our entertainment reporter has been reading the Romanian media for over a year, perhaps up to three years, and this is what he has to say...

Learning a new language can be hard, especially when you try to learn word for word. A Romanian word that vaguely means with is ‘cu.’ In most cases, you would simply translate 🇲🇩🇷🇴cu as 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇱🇷with. But, if you look at food, you often see ‘cu’ where t...

We are off to Cluj Days, to celebrate, observe, get a tour, watch a show, and more. Just go anywhere in Cluj and there is bound to be something going on this weekend. (Okay, maybe you can find a quiet spot around the malls or something, but anywhere that things happen, things will probably happen).

Starting on Thursday the 18th (today), Cluj celebrates itself with a long festival weekend. (Don’t worry, you can still go to work. The long weekend doesn’t give you the day off, it just gives you something to do if you do happen to have some time off.) Cluj Days program in English. As you can s...

tonight is night of the Museum in Cluj and throughout Romania. This means museums are open late, with special exhibitions, and in many cases they are free.
(Not all museums are participating but most of the museums that we know of in Cluj were on this list).

Tonight is the night at the museum, not the movie, but a free museum entrance at night. (Today, Saturday, the 13th. Some start at noon, most start their free entrance at five or six). Thirteen is good luck if you life free things, but potentially bad luck if you hate crowds. Here is a little expat-o...

You might be considering a business in Romania. The reason? Well, maybe you live here. Your spouse or parents moved you here, you fell in love with the culture, you have Romanian ancestry that you are getting back in touch with, or you had another plan here that didn’t work out and you just like l...

Does Romania have free speech? On paper, every country in Nato has free speech. In practice, almost every country I know about has sever limits to this free speech.
A recent tribunal decision against a TV station has us at Hey Cluj a little worried.

We all know the limits of free speech around the world. I would not recommend that Portuguese people go to Canada, because it is easy to mix up her and his (her looks more like he, all my cousins mix up their pronouns when they learn English). Another country that claims freedom of speech is Singapo...

If you want to watch TV in Cluj, you have a lot of options. We haven't found a way to watch our favourite Chris Rock movies yet, but everything else we can think of seems to be available here. (Not in the link yet, the classic Star Trek movies, with Leonard McCoy as Spok, are on Sky Showtime).

The Hungarian theatre in Cluj, review of the place, not the play. Is it worth a visit?

Is the Hungarian language theatre for English speakers? Yes. Not only can you read English (and Romanian) subtitles but the announcements to take your seat before the performance and at the end of the break are also in three languages. Anyway, the acting and design tends to be high enough quality, t...
