Sentinels of a European ground squirrel family on the Romanian Plain. Small in size but locally still abundant, this keystone species requires pastures that are becoming rare either because of conversion of land to arable or abandonment followed by succession. Rare birds of prey like Eastern Imperial Eagle, Saker Falcon, Long-legged Buzzard, Booted Eagle stay in a queue for a good souslik-stake.

Frogs have a little time advantage, their larvae are about to swim away. Fresh toad spawns are like oversized necklaces. Sometimes, you find the toad parents at one end of the necklace.

János Csibi and his son Gyula are the shepherds of the flock of sheep in Csíkcsobotfalva.
In June parish priest Gergely visits János to bless the sheepfold and the shepherd’s hut.

ENG. Csobotfalva Chronicles: Driving Home the Sheep

At the end of autumn, when it can snow any minute,
farmers select their sheep from the common herd
and drive them home. Trained eyes can distinguish their own from the many sheep that look the same
and there is a special vocabulary for this purpose.
The individual earmarks applied by each family also help the identification.

a gazdák kiválasztják juhaikat a közös nyájból és hazahajtják őket. A sok egyformának látszó juhot a gyakorlott szem
meg tudja különböztetni egymástól és a tájnyelv változatos szókinccsel illeti.
A gazdák saját jelzései, a füljegyek is segítenek az azonosításban.
