Today, we're releasing the Fall edition of our Sound Sanctuary series, this time with JD Pinkus of Bu****le Surfers.
The Sound Sanctuary series consists of four improvised collaborative releases between artists and the Sound Sanctuary, a plant ensemble centered around a towering money tree (Pachira aquatica) and four rubber trees (Ficus elastica). Earlier this year, we released Sound Sanctuary collaborations with Deerhoof and Kishi Bashi / Tall Tall Trees.
JD Pinkus walked into our office one afternoon armed only with his banjo and effects pedals. He started with "Fungus Shui Trinity," which he chose because its topic is plant medicine. Pinkus told us, "I thought it would be fitting — but that’s when I thought I was going to be the one telling the plants what to do. I had to actually let the plants play the song, and I had to play the plants.” He then recorded what became side 2 of the record, "Leaf Me Alone," with the plants in the driver's seat.
"JD Pinkus and the Sound Sanctuary" is now streaming, and also available in our 4-part Sound Sanctuary Box Set, which is shipping now.
The set comes in a hand-crafted and laser-etched box, hand-numbered out of 300. It will contain all four 10" records we're releasing this year with The Sound Sanctuary. JD Pinkus & The Sound Sanctuary is also available à la carte.
