Update!

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Elijah F. Rufus as the new Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), replacing suspended Commissioner General Stephen Zargo.
Rufus, previously Deputy Commissioner for Administration and Acting Commissioner General, assumes the role following Zargo’s suspension over alleged mishandling of a court-related travel restriction. Despite Zargo’s suspension ending in February, he was not reinstated before Rufus’s appointment, sparking speculation about underlying reasons.
Rufus’s confirmation by the Liberian Senate is pending, and he is expected to lead key immigration reforms amid Liberia’s recent launch of its Visa on Arrival service.

The Government of Liberia has approved a total of two million United States dollars to support the conduct of the upcoming senatorial by-election in Nimba County, according to the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah.

Madam Browne Lansanah made the disclosure on Friday at the conclusion of the candidate nomination exercise for the by-election, which is scheduled on April 22 to fill the vacant seat in the Liberian Senate.

Speaking to reporters, the NEC Chairperson revealed that the Commission issued a total of 11 nomination packages to individuals expressing interest in contesting the by-election. However, only eight of the packages were returned to the Commission by the conclusion of the nomination period.

For Liberia United Nations Security Council Bid, Liberia Counts on Mali's Support...

The President of the Transition, His Excellency General Assimi GOÏTA, received in audience on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in Koulouba, a large delegation from the Republic of Liberia, led by Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Minister conveyed message of friendship and fraternity from His Excellency Joseph Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia.

Minister Nyanti indicated that her visit to Mali is part of Liberia's candidacy for non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council. "To this end, it seems important, in such circumstances, to seek the support of sister countries in order to obtain the greatest possible number of votes for the position in question.

A candidacy, she continued, that aims to represent Africa on the United Nations Security Council and, above all, to defend the continent's strategic interests.

"We have a common destiny," affirmed H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, before recalling the geographical and cultural ties that unite Mali and Liberia.
In conclusion, Her Excellency the Minister expressed her satisfaction with her meeting with the Head of State.

Representative Jerry Yorbor writes

STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 14, 2025

"HON. YOGBOH CONDEMNS HIS ILLEGAL SUSPENSION- VOWS TO STAND IN CONTINUOUS DEFENCE OF THE RULE OF LAW UNTIL THE SUPREME COURT RULE ON THE BILL OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE LEADERSHIP IMPASSE AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES77

My fellow Liberians, especially my essteemed citizens of Electoral District 12, Montserrado County, who I represent at the House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature, I strongly condemn my illegal and unconstitutional suspension by the so-called majority bloc of the House of Representatives. This reckless and unlawful action is in further defiance of the Supreme Court's December 6, 2024 Ruling, which renders all actions and sittings of the majority bloc "Ultra vires". It is unfortunate that some of my colleagues at the House of Representatives are bent on consistently and persistently violating the Rule of law and parliamentary procedures.

This arbitrary suspension action by the so-called majority bloc has no legal merit, especially when all of their actions and sittings, including the suspension action against seven (7) members of the Rule of Law Caucus of the House of Representatives are being challenged before the Supreme Court of Liberia. The continuous illegal actions by the so-called majority bloc are not only unconstitutional and unlawful but also have the proclivity to undermine Liberia's democratic credentials.

Let it be made crystally clear that given the current composition of 73 members of the House, at least 49 members MUST be present in session, and 49 members must vote in favor to effect any suspension or expulsion action against a member. Therefore, assuming that my colleagues had the legal authority to take suspension actions, my suspension would be completely null and void, due to their failure to meet the constitutional and number requirement of two-thirds majority of members of the House of Representatives.

My fellow Liberians and distinguished citizens of District 12, the continuous illegal suspension action by the so-called majority bloc in the midst of the group's announced renconciliation retreat at Farmington surely exposes their high level of insincerity and pretense for a united House of Representatives. While I am committed to a peaceful and lawful resolution of the ongoing crisis in the House of Representatives, efforts by the Rule of Law Caucus in fostering dialogue and restoring peace and order continue to be undermined by the reckless actions of our colleagues who seek to breeds division and constitutional breakdown. This justifies why members of the Rule of Law have decided not to attend the reconciliation retreat.

Let it be known that I am not deterred by the illegal suspension. I call on my supporters and the general citizens of Electoral District 12, Montserrado County, not to panic, and continue to support my stance in upholding the Rule of Law. It is time that all democratic forces, civil society organizations, and the Liberian people STAND FIRM in defence of the rule of law. Like I have always said, Liberia can only experience growth and progress provided we do things differently and not 'business as usual', especially when it comes to adhering to and protecting the Rule of Law.

My fellow Liberians and People of District 12, while awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on the Bill of Information regarding the ongoing leaderhsip crisis and legality question at the House of Representatives, I will remain steadfast and uncompromising in my stance on the SIDE OF THE RULE OF LAW"

SIGNED:

Hon. Jerry K. Yogboh
Representative
District 12, Montserrado County

For Calling Former President Weah “Common Citizen”, CDC Propagandist Abraham Wheon Threatens VP Koung; says he (Koung) will “feel the pinch of his Words”

Monrovia – A leading propagandist of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and political commentator, Abraham Godsent Wheon, has issued threats against Vice President Jeremiah Koung over his recent characterization of former President George Weah as a “common citizen.”

In a strongly worded statement, Wheon suggested that Koung would face consequences for his remarks, warning that he would “feel the pinch” of his words.

The term pinch, in this context, implies that Koung will experience discomfort, or potential retaliation as a result of his statement.

“Jeremiah Koung, you put yourself at serious risk with that statement. The day you go out some days, you will see what will happen to your convoy. Some things will happen to you in this country—you will get scared.”

The remarks, which suggest possible threats to the Vice President’s security, have raised concerns about political tensions and the safety of government officials. It remains unclear whether authorities will take action in response to Wheon’s statements, but the comments add to the already charged political climate.

The Vice President has not publicly responded to the threats, but political analysts warn that such rhetoric could incite violence and further deepen divisions within the country.
