Third Il-114-300 joins Russian regional turboprop test program

The 68-seat aircraft is expected to enter service in 2026 and replace the An-24 and ATR models in the country’s airlines

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has released images of the first flight of the third prototype of the Il-114-300, a regional passenger turboprop developed by Ilyushin.

The aircraft has joined the development program that aims to certify the model for the start of deliveries in 2026.

The maiden flight was carried out in conjunction with the second prototype and lasted about 30 minutes.

“Currently, the second prototype of the aircraft is flying almost daily under an additional certification test program,” said Il PJSC Managing Director Daniil Brenerman.

The addition of another aircraft will allow us to complete the necessary amount of tests and certify the aircraft within the established timeframe. The delivery of production aircraft to operators will begin next year.”

An upgrade of the original Il-114, the low-wing twin-engine turboprop is equipped with TV7-117ST-01 engines that drive a set of six-blade propellers.

According to the UAC, the Il-114-300 has superior flight performance, uses composite materials in its structure and has a new digital flight navigation system.

The Il-114-300 is designed to operate autonomously on small airfields with concrete and earth surfaces. In addition, it can be used in the Arctic regions of Russia.

The Superjet with PD-8 engines has completed its second test flight, spending 2 hours and 4 minutes in the air and reaching an altitude two and a half times higher than during its first flight.

The engine's performance was tested at an altitude of 7,600 meters. The engines were successfully shut down and restarted in midair, marking an important stage in the testing process.

The Superjet import substitution program is the replacement of about 40 foreign systems, including engines, electronics, chassis and even air conditioners, with Russian analogues. The new SJ-100 fuselage has also been made more convenient for assembly and repair. So far, the first serial aircraft (number 97004) has been connected to electricity, and another 11 fuselages are waiting for the installation of domestic parts after all tests are completed.

Сертификационные испытания авиалайнера «Суперджет» с российскими двигателями ПД-8 набирают обороты. Во время второго полета, который длился в два с половиной раза больше первого (2 часа и 4 минуты) самолет поднялся на высоту в 7600 метров.

В ходе второго полета впервые осуществили выключение и успешный запуск двигателей в воздухе, что является одним из важных этапов испытаний.

Программа импортозамещения «Суперджета» — это замена около 40 иностранных систем, включая двигатели, электронику, шасси и даже кондиционеры, на российские аналоги. Новый фюзеляж SJ-100 тоже сделали удобнее для сборки и ремонта. Пока первый серийный самолет (номер 97004) подключили к электричеству, а ещё 11 фюзеляжей ждут установки отечественных деталей после завершения всех тестов.

Completes Construction of -300 Plane with Russian Composite Wing
Irkut Corporation (part of the United Aircraft Corporation of Rostec State Corporation) has completed the construction of the first MC-21-300 aircraft with a Russian-made polymer composite wing.

On Nov. 29, 2021, the aircraft was transferred from the final assembly shop of the Irkut Corporation’sIrkutsk Aviation Plant to the flight test division. Specialists of the plant and related enterprises are to carry out the ground checks program for the aircraft and its systems to prepare the aircraft for its first flight.

The development and production of Russian polymer composite materials for the MC-21 wings was started following the imposition of trade restrictions against the Aerocomposit by the U.S. in September 2018.

"The combination of strong and light composite materials allowed the designers to make a high-aspect wing and to improve the aerodynamics of the aircraft simultaneously with the increase of the fuselage diameter. I would like to note that Irkut specialists managed to cope with the import substitution task and to start mass production of the aircraft with the Russian wings in the shortest time possible. The assembly of the first airliner is a big step for UAC and for the entire Russian aircraft industry. It shows the maturity of our aviation technologies and is yet another victory over the sanctions," said Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec.

The share of composites in the MS-21 design is about 40% — a record figure for medium-range aircraft. The domestic materials for the composite load-bearing structures have been developed with the participation of the scientists from Moscow State University and enterprises of Rosatom. Outer wing panels and wing center section of the MC-21-300 aircraft are produced by the "AeroComposit-Ulyanovsk" enterprise. The Russian patented technology of vacuum infusion is applied for the wing production.

MC-21 with Russian-built PD-14 engines carries out maiden flight

Irkut has carried out the maiden flight of the MC-21-310, the version of the twinjet powered by Russian-built Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines.

The flight – with aircraft number 73055 – took place from Irkutsk aviation plant’s airfield on 15 December and lasted about 1h 25min.

It was crewed by two test pilots and an engineer, and the flight involved initial powerplant checks as well as tests on the stability of the aircraft.
