Starting from December 1, 2024, foreigners entering Russia through five checkpoints will have their biometric data - fingerprints and photographs - collected.

This data collection has been implemented at the Mashtakovo checkpoint on the border with Kazakhstan, as well as at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Vnukovo airports. The same procedure is also applicable when leaving the Russian Federation through these checkpoints.

Beginning June 30, 2025, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will establish digital profiles for foreigners, regardless of their point of entry, which will include their biometric data. Biometrics will be collected from all foreign citizens and stateless persons, with the following exceptions:

• Citizens of Belarus.

• Employees of foreign embassies and consulates, along with their family members.

• Employees of international organizations visiting Russia on official business trips and their family members.

• Holders of diplomatic and service passports with a diplomatic or service visa and their family members.

• Other holders of diplomatic or service visas.

• Children under the age of 6.

Individuals in this exempt list will not be required to submit biometric data starting December 1, nor will they need to participate in digital profiling from June 30, 2025.

The Russian government has adopted a decree requiring foreign citizens to undergo interviews when applying for a visa. Additionally, under the new regulations, foreigners may obtain a visa in a country where they are not citizens only if they possess a document confirming their permission to reside in that country for more than 180 days.

In the year following Airbnb's departure, it became nearly impossible to securely and quickly book private accommodations at affordable prices in Russian cities and abroad. However, by the third year without the global giant, an identical national platform - Sutochno. ru (the link in the first comment) - emerged in Russia that covers all the major cities within the country and abroad and collaborates with private accommodation owners. It features a similar interface, offers filters for price and accommodation conditions, and includes an English version.

This year, I finally tested the platform myself by renting an apartment in St. Petersburg and another in Vologda. I quickly grasped how the service works, as the interface closely resembles that of Airbnb. Booking accommodations is instant, there’s a chat option with the owner, and technical support is quite responsive. You can leave only your phone number as personal data on the site, which you use to access your account. In both instances, I paid a third of the reservation amount through the platform and settled the remainder directly with the accommodation owner. The platform is actively promoted in the media, the website becomes famous, so many apartments already have detailed guest reviews.

Additionally, the site offers a bonus system for each booking. For example, when I booked an apartment in Vologda for four days at a cost of 7,800 rubles, I received 390 bonuses that can be used for future purchases. One bonus equals one ruble. The link is in the first comment
