Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live in the Soviet Union in the middle of the XX century? Well, now you can, thanks to the latest project we had the privilege to be a part of, courtesy of the producers at Marmot-Film. "The Frenchman" is a film about a french young man who comes to study in the USSR, in the 60's, and finds himself in a whirlwind of emotions and events, from the inevitable culture shock, to falling in love, to being asked to do intelligence work for the soviets. What could have eventually been a simple comedy movie, a drama or a thriller, ends up being a very well-constructed melange of all these genres, with surprising interpretations and a very distinctive storyline. This can be partially explained by director Andrey Smirnov's words, as he said "to me, the most important thing was to depict the formation of the generation of the 'Sixtiers', to which I belong". And it seems like he nailed it, as the film's authenticity and natural flow really do seem to bring us back in time. "Everywhere on set there were people working who were true masters of their craft", Smirnov continued. "When the crew was together, it was pure pleasure. To me, every shooting day was a celebration", he confessed, as he added that "there was always this feeling that we were not just filming something pointless just to make some money, but that we were really trying to create art. The crew passed this on to the actors and the actors to the crew."
The exact same thing can be said about the film's sound, the post-production of which was fully made at our studios. Oleg Tatarinov, our long-time friend and collaborator, famous for his powerful and punchy mixes, was the Sound Supervisor. He was, likewise, inspired by the filmmakers' intentions and surprised everyone by getting out of his comfort zone, delivering a clean, detailed and very expressive mix, as he helped set the tone for the final cut of this compelling story.
We have nothing but gratitude and joy for the opportunity to be part of such meaningful project, reason for which we thank Andrey, Oleg, Marmot-Film and everyone else involved in the making of it. Here's to genuine creativity, emotional journeys and the diversity of life!
