🤔 Why Drilling Through Salt is So Challenging – From a Drilling Fluids Perspective

♦️Drilling through thick salt formations is not just about making hole – it’s about controlling a living, moving formation.
Salt behaves plastically under high pressure, slowly creeping into the wellbore like cold honey. This creates:
• High borehole collapse risk
• Unpredictable changes in wellbore geometry
• Increased torque & drag
• Casing running challenges

From a fluids standpoint, our job is to engineer a mud system that can:
✅ Minimize washouts & creep by optimizing rheology
✅ Maintain stability without overexposing the salt
✅ Manage thermal and pressure effects over long sections
✅ Reduce dissolution of salt to maintain gauge hole

♦️When combined with seismic imaging difficulties and variable salt thickness (which can exceed 1000 m), it’s clear why drilling through salt demands teamwork between drilling, fluids, and geomechanics.
