Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus is a rare winter visitor to the northern Hejaz and Central Arabia that has been recorded once in Jeddah and once in the Eastern Province on the Dibdibah 18 & 19 December 1986. As a result of the status of the species it is possible/probable the birds all refer to a single individual, as the distance between the first and second sightings was about 100 kilometres to the west, and the distance from the second to the third sighting was about 80 kilometres to the north. On July 20, 2015 we saw similar species at Tanoma Mountain Al Hejaz Region while we were traveling from Abha to Al Baha.

PAINTERS ON THE STREETS :

Jeddawis are not only known for being fun, modern and outgoing, but also great artists. Presently, Jeddah Heritage Festival 2015 is somewhat focuses on visual arts. There you can find too many painters, craftsmen and designers. But what caught my attention is the street visual artists who offer instant painting, particularly portrait paintings. Glad to know that most of them are young and energetic.

With those paintings we’ve seen displayed along the pathways, there are missing. This is probably that the visual propagandas tackling social issues are not yet accepted in the communities. These are some of the limitations that these artists cannot explore. Hopefully, one day at our stay in the kingdom we can experience similar displays of works of arts – depicting social issues.

PAGES FROM HISTORY

Having curiosity about the Heritage Festival in Jeddah, we roamed around at the Old Balad – the center of the celebrations. There was a certain old man standing at the door to one of the century old houses, who was trying to figure out every people going around the corner. When he got our attention, he invited us to get inside the house. He led us going inside walking on the red carpet. He introduced us, in Arabic to his daughter who can speak English. Everywhere in the house, at the wall, column, hallways are newspapers framed delicately on the wood.

His daughter conversed with us. She spoke in fluent English and introduced every piece of works hanged on the wall. We found out that his father is a News paper Collector. Accordingly, his father started collecting newspaper published in Saudi Arabia since the newspaper was allowed to circulate in the Kingdom. Every pieces hanged on the wall are all Original Copies. There came the first graduate of the first university in the kingdom. Some clippings of the social issues, diplomatic relations with the other neighboring countries, etc were all depicted on the papers. We took the time to look, scrutinize and take some pictures of the arts and a picture with the Collector. The Newspaper Collector is Mr. JABER MOHAMMED AL-GHAMDI, a native from Al Baha Province who is known to us for his works as PAGES FROM HISTORY.
