Dear Future OFW,
Before you pack your bags and hug everyone goodbye, let me tell you some things no one will teach you in the guidebook.
First, homesickness is real. It hits at the most random moments ~ isang kanta sa radyo, isang amoy sa kalsada, o isang street vendor na nagbebenta ng paborito mong pagkain. Maiiyak ka, at okay lang 'yon. Crying doesn't mean you're weak~ it just means you're human.
Second, independence doesn't come overnight. You'll struggle with buses, bills, and even deciding what to cook for yourself. Mamimiss mo advice ni Mama, paalala ni Papa, at tawa ng mga kapatid mo. At yes, doing laundry alone at midnight becomes a weird kind of pride.
Third, joy comes in small victories. A student smiling because you explained something well. A stranger helping you when you're lost. A new friend laughing at your broken Mandarin~ treasure these moments~ they are your new family.
Fourth, you'll grow in ways you never imagined. You'll become more patient, resilient, and courageous.
Madidiscover mo ang strengths mo, and you'll learn to carry your dreams and courage together.
Finally, remember why you left. It's not just for money, adventure, or travel. It's to build a better life ~ for you and for those waiting at home. Every lonely night, every challenge, every tear is worth it.
So pack your suitcase, take a deep breath, and step forward. The world may be big and unfamiliar, but you are bigger than any fear. Every OFW started exactly where you are now ~ unsure, nervous, but ready to fly.
With love and courage,
YanYan ♥️
