The European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated Europe Day, a moment dedicated to unity, peace, and a shared commitment to common values. First proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950, Europe Day continues to reflect the spirit of cooperation that has shaped the European project.
In his remarks on the enduring significance of the Schuman Declaration — not only for Europe, but for the wider world — His Excellency Ambassador Christophe Farnaud noted that, despite the ambitious efforts of the 1950s, the modern world still faces conflicts and challenges that threaten regional and global stability and prosperity. At the same time, positive transformations are unfolding alongside these challenges, shaping the European Union’s response to a changing international landscape.
“Innovation is accelerating medical breakthroughs, expanding access to knowledge and opening new economic frontiers. Society is more connected than ever. The real question is whether we shape these changes or are shaped by them. The European Union’s answer is clear: we need to act, embrace transformation that empowers progress, and stand up where our values and interests are at risk,” said H.E. Christophe Farnaud.
The Ambassador also highlighted the many parallels between Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the European Union’s own response to global change, particularly in the areas of economic diversification, social progress and sustainable development. He concluded that success can only be achieved through partnership and a shared willingness to overcome challenges together, as envisioned in the Schuman Declaration.
