Middle East aviation is moving into a more divided market, with passenger and cargo trends heading in different directions. April data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed passenger demand in the region fell 46.6%, contributing to a 3.4% decline in global demand, while air cargo volumes continued to expand.

Global cargo demand increased 4.0% year-on-year (YOY) during the month, even as available cargo capacity slipped 0.4%. The gap between demand and capacity is becoming increasingly important for airlines because passenger aircraft normally provide a large share of cargo lift through bellyhold space.

Global airline executives will convene in Rio de Janeiro from June 6 to 8 to address the significant challenges posed by the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has led to soaring jet fuel prices, necessitated flight detours, and threatened the viability of various routes.

This annual summit of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), representing over 370 airlines and about 85% of global air traffic, is critical as the industry was poised for record profits estimated at $41 billion before the onset of the war.

Airlines across the Gulf entered 2026 with ambitious expansion plans, strong passenger demand and growing long haul networks. Many of those plans now depend on factors outside airline control.

Airlines across the Gulf entered 2026 with ambitious expansion plans, strong passenger demand and growing long haul networks. Many of those plans now depend on factors outside airline control. Delays at Airbus and Boeing, engine maintenance constraints and a limited supply of available aircraft have created a market where securing lift has become increasingly difficult.

Recent growth in the Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) market provides one indication of that change. According to ACC Aviation, global widebody ACMI demand increased 30.1% year-on-year (YOY) during the first quarter of 2026. Activity was linked to airlines including Emirates, Etihad Airways, Saudia and Turkish Airlines.
