I never really felt noticed while I was in my own province, Cavite, until today.

While I was walking home along a one-way road, a motorcycle suddenly stopped beside me. It caught me by surprise because I was dressed in my usual pambahay outfit. I’m normally more conscious about how I dress when I’m in Manila, but here in Cavite, I usually just dress casually and comfortably, kasi walang nag-a-approach sa'kin dito.

It was such a simple and unexpected moment, but somehow it made me realize that even when I’m just in my ordinary pambahay clothes, may nakakilala pa rin, na parang sino ba 'ko para mag-pa-picture sila? Hiya pa rin ako. But sometimes, you don’t expect to stand out at all, until a random moment reminds you of what you do.

They are both college graduates who have remained humble, well-educated, and genuinely good people.

Adam, who once lived in an orphanage, overcame life’s challenges through his own hard work, perseverance, and determination. He not only succeeded through his efforts but also graduated at the top of his class. Today, he is giving back by helping provide education and opportunities for other children.

JC, who came from a well-off family, learned how to connect with people from all walks of life. Despite his privileged background, he has remained humble, treating everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their age, status, or background. He continues to help others through his music and the opportunities he creates for people around him.

Their stories are a reminder that a diploma, academic achievements, or honors are not what truly define a person. What matters most is how we love and respect others, how we treat people regardless of where they come from, and how we use whatever blessings we have to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Honestly, I prefer paying my taxes through the bank because I feel more comfortable and secure handling a large amount through a formal bank transaction.

Today, however, I experienced something that made me think. The bank teller initially seemed annoyed and spoke to me in a rather disrespectful manner. He even commented, “Baligtad kasi ang pag-stapler eh,” while looking at me from head to toe. I was simply wearing ordinary pambahay clothes, so perhaps he made an assumption based on my appearance.

But when he saw the amount of taxes I was going to pay, his tone suddenly changed. He became noticeably more polite and accommodating.

It made me reflect on something I sometimes observe in Filipino society, people can be treated differently depending on how they perceive your appearance, status, or financial capability.

Respect, however, should not depend on how much money someone has, what they are wearing, or what they can afford to pay. Whether someone walks into a bank wearing pambahay clothes or dressed formally, they deserve to be treated with the same basic courtesy and dignity.

You never really know what someone is capable of or what their story is, just by looking at them.
