The Honest Choice

Setting: Bucharest, Romania

On a rainy afternoon, Ana walked into a small corner store in Bucharest. She was in a hurry to buy some bread and milk. As she handed the cashier a 100 lei note, the woman behind the counter smiled and gave her back the change.

But when Ana stepped outside, she realized something: the cashier had given her back 90 lei instead of 70.

She stood in the rain for a moment.
“Should I go back?” she wondered.
“It’s just 20 lei…”

But then she remembered her father’s words:

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

Ana turned around and walked back in.
“I think you gave me too much change,” she said, returning the extra 20 lei.

The cashier’s eyes lit up with surprise.
“Mulțumesc!” she said. “Not many would do that. You’ve made my day.”

Ana walked home smiling. The lesson was simple, but powerful:
Honesty always pays — sometimes in kindness, not coins.
