Suva, Fiji – 22 August 2025 – The Diocese of Polynesia joins the wider Pacific family in blessing the voyaging canoe Uto ni Yalo as it departs Suva on the Wansolwara Voyage to the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands. His Grace Archbishop Sione Uluilakepa, Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, led the blessing ceremony, invoking God’s protection and guidance upon the vaka and crew.
This year’s crew includes a young Anglican from Tonga and Fiji, representing the next generation of Pacific leaders and guardians of the ocean. Her presence together with other young sailors affirms the Diocese’s commitment to raising young voices in advocacy for climate justice, peace, and the protection of creation.
Archbishop Sione drew from Psalm 107:23–25, 31–38, a passage that speaks of those who “go down to the sea in ships” and witness the mighty works of God in the deep. He reminded the crew and all gathered that the voyage is not only a physical journey but also a spiritual mission:
• A journey of faith and trust – as the winds and waves respond to the voice of the Creator, so too are we called to place our trust in God’s guiding hand.
• A witness to God’s creation – the vast ocean is both gift and responsibility, reminding us to care for it faithfully as stewards.
• A call to thanksgiving – for God’s steadfast love and wondrous works that sustain life, nourish communities, and renew the earth.
• A blessing of abundance – as the Psalm promises, God turns deserts into pools of water and dry land into springs, so may this voyage bring renewal, life, and hope to the Pacific.
In his message, Archbishop Sione said: “This vaka carries with it not only the hopes of its crew but also the prayers of our Pacific peoples. We are reminded by the psalmist that those who sail the seas witness the wonders of God’s creation, and they are called to give thanks for His steadfast love. May this voyage be a testimony of faith, of unity across our ocean, and of our shared responsibility to safeguard creation.”

After several weeks of dry weather, Honiara today experienced a heavy downpour—the strongest in weeks—causing flooding in parts of the capital.
While a brief shower fell on Wednesday, today’s rain was far more intense, leaving stretches of road under water. On the eastern side of town, flooding from the Kukum SDA Church to the Kwaimani Building—an area notorious for waterlogging—brought traffic to a crawl, with long queues of vehicles heading west.
The rain was welcomed by many residents who rely on tank water, but for drivers navigating through floodwaters, it was a much less pleasant experience.

HCC ATTENDS INTRODUCTORY SESSION ON CAUSE II PROJECT

Honiara City Councillors attended an introductory session on Thursday, 21 August 2025, at the Iron Bottom Sound (IBS) Conference Room in Honiara to learn more about the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) Project.

City Clerk, Mr. Justus Denni, opened the session and delivered an inspirational message on behalf of the Council. He encouraged councillors to seize opportunities to enhance urban services and foster safer, cleaner, and more inclusive communities throughout the city.

Mr. Cris Afable, Project Manager for CAUSE II, led the presentation with his team, giving an overview of the project’s goals, components, and expected benefits for Honiara and the surrounding areas.

CAUSE II is a Government of Solomon Islands initiative led by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Honiara City Council. It also involves collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey, as well as the Provincial Governments of Guadalcanal, Malaita, and Western Province.

The project is supported by the World Bank and Australia through the Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund (PPIUF).

Councillors were briefed on how CAUSE II will support infrastructure improvements, waste management, and the creation of short-term employment through community works programs. The session also highlighted the project’s focus on building skills and providing income opportunities for youth, women, and vulnerable groups.

The Council thanked the CAUSE II team for their presentation and expressed strong support for the project’s implementation in Honiara.

Friday 22 August 2025, Honiara - The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has provided SBD 200,000 in support for the 9th Pacific Water and Wastewater Ministers (PWWM) Forum and the 16th Pacific Water and Wastewater Association (PWWA) Conference and Expo (PWWC25), which will be hosted by the Solomon Islands from 25–29 August 2025 at the National Aquatic Centre in Honiara.
The funding was received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE), Dr. Chris Vehe, who expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for their continued support to the government.
“This contribution will greatly assist in hosting a successful forum, enabling us to strengthen water and wastewater services across the Pacific and share knowledge, experiences, and solutions for a sustainable future,” said Dr. Chris Vehe.

Since its establishment in 2015, the PWWM Forum has served as a key platform for regional policy dialogue on water security, a cornerstone of public health, economic growth, and climate resilience. China’s financial contribution ensures that Ministers, utility professionals, policymakers, researchers, young water professionals, and development partners from across the region can come together to collaborate and innovate.
This year’s theme, “Water and Wastewater Service for All: Connecting People, Policies and Communities for a Shared Sustainable Future,” highlights the urgent need for regional cooperation to strengthen water and wastewater services.
Ministers responsible for water and wastewater will convene for one and a half days to deliberate on pressing water security challenges. The objectives of the 9th PWWM Forum are to:
1. Elevate the collective Pacific voice on water security as a central pillar of sustainable development, resilience, and regional security.

2. Advance sustainable financing and capacity-building opportunities to accelerate action on water security.

The Solomon Islands Government, in partnership with the Solomon Islands Water Authority, the PWWA Secretariat, and the Pacific Community (SPC), is working closely to ensure the success of this landmark event. Last year, the Cook Islands successfully hosted the forum in Rarotonga. This year, the Solomon Islands is honoured to host and looks forward to welcoming delegates, partners, and stakeholders to Honiara for what promises to be a milestone gathering in advancing water security for the Blue Pacific Continent.
