UNIQUE DONATES TO SUPPORT KWAI BEACH GAMES

UNIQUE Enterprise Limited, the well-known distributor of Nice 1 products in Solomon Islands, has stepped forward with a generous donation to support the hosting of the 2025 Kwai Beach Games.

The contribution marks another meaningful partnership between the private sector and communities working together to elevate sports, youth engagement, and local development in East Malaita.
Speaking during the handover today, a representative from Unique Enterprises Ltd said the company was proud to support the Kwai Beach Games.

“We believe in supporting community activities that bring people together,” the representative said.

“The Kwai Beach Games is a positive event for young people, families, and visitors, and we are happy to contribute to its success,” she added.

The donation includes a range of Nice 1 products that will be used throughout the event to support both athletes and organisers.
Accepting the goods on behalf of the LOC, Robin Tom thanked Unique Enterprises Ltd for its timely support.

“On behalf of the organising team and the Kwai community, I want to express our sincere appreciation,” Tom said.

“Every contribution, big or small, helps us deliver a safe, exciting, and well-organised Games. Unique Enterprises Ltd has shown true community spirit.”

The 2025 Kwai Beach Games will run from 22 to 27 December and will coincide with the grand opening and dedication of the new Kwai Ebenezer Hall and Transit on 26 December 2025. The dual celebration is expected to draw large crowds, making this year’s event one of the most anticipated in the community’s calendar.

Tom highlighted that support from businesses, individuals, and community groups continues to play a crucial role in ensuring the success of both the games and the upcoming hall opening.

“Partnerships like this strengthen our preparations and show that these events are more than sports and ceremonies—they are moments of unity and shared pride for our people,” he said.

The Kwai Beach Games will feature beach soccer, volleyball, canoe racing, and children’s games, attracting participants and spectators from within the Gula’ala region of east Malaita.

ELECTION PROCESS UNDER FIRE

…NOCSI disqualify candidates to protect incumbent Rara

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

THE nomination for the upcoming National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) is being questioned by most National Federations (NFs) regarding the transparency of the process, which resulted in the current President, Martin Rara, running unopposed and likely to retain his title after serving in the office for 11 years.

There were two candidates nominated for the President role for the upcoming NOCSI election on Sunday.

However, the NOCSI board deemed these nominations invalid, leaving the current President in a strong position to retain his title unopposed.

These candidates come from the Hockey Federation and Basketball Federation. The candidate for basketball was nominated by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), while the candidate for Hockey was nominated by the Solomon Islands Tennis Federation (SITF).

The representative from SIFF who nominated the basketball candidate was blacklisted, resulting in the nomination being regarded as invalid. However, there is no specific clause in the constitution for blacklisting.

The nomination made by a representative from SITF for the Hockey candidate was also invalid due to Hockey's status as an associate member and not a full member.

However, federations are expressing frustration with how the NOCSI Board is handling the nomination process, especially regarding the decision made on the nomination by the SITF for a Hockey candidate for the President post.

SunSPORTS learned that only ten out of around twenty-eight federations were considered in the nomination process conducted by the NOCSI General Secretary, Melinda Avosa.

NOCSI Board Member, Morris Maitaki, told SunSPORTS that all federations are aware of their membership status with NOCSI in terms of the nomination process.

SunSPORTS also made efforts to reach out to Rara and Avosa but received no response.

According to Article 6.1 of the NOCSI constitution, membership of the NOCSI shall be open to all National Federations affiliated with International Federations governing sports included in the program of the Olympic Games. Such federations must be voting members and always constitute the voting majority within the NOCSI.

They shall be represented at the General Assembly meeting by up to two delegates with one vote each.

This includes NFs affiliated with International Federations whose sports are not included in the program of the Olympic Games but are recognized by the IOC. They shall be represented at the General Assembly meeting by up to two delegates with one vote each.

In Article 6.2, it is stated that to be recognized and accepted as a member of NOCSI, NFs must administer a specific, real, and ongoing sports activity in the Solomon Islands, particularly by organizing annual competitions for athletes in at least three provinces in the Solomon Islands.

NOCSI President Martin Rara is also the President of the Sailing Federation, which has no active programs and competitions organized annually in Honiara and in the Provinces, unlike other sports that host their annual programs in Honiara, but were regarded as non-members and associate members of the NOCSI.

The Article also states that a federation can be accepted as a member of NOCSI if they are affiliated with an IF governing a sport included in the program of the Olympic Games or an IF whose sport is not on the program of the Olympic Games but is an IF recognized by the IOC.

NFs must be governed by and comply in all aspects with both the Olympic charter and the rules of their IF.

Applications for membership to NOCSI from NFs shall be made in writing to the GS/CEO. All such applications shall be accompanied by a certificate of recognition from the relevant IF, a copy of the approved constitution of the applicant federation, minutes of the meeting at which the federation was founded and its constitution adopted, and a list of its office bearers and their portfolios.

NFs that fail to fulfill the membership requirements are called provisional members. Provisional members can be invited to participate in the NOCSI General Assembly meetings but do not have any voting rights and are not entitled to any funding from NOCSI.

In Article 13 of the Constitution, it is stated that Executive Board Members and National Federations affiliated with NOCSI and financially at the time of submitting the nomination papers are responsible for nominating members to the Executive Board.

Filling vacancies on the Executive Board that may occur between Annual General Assembly Meetings of NOCSI is the responsibility of the Executive Board, subject to ratification at the next General Assembly.

The duration of all such appointments shall be for the uncompleted term of the vacant position. When considering and nominating potential board members to an Annual General Assembly Meeting for election, NOCSI seeks to consider gender equality and identify candidates with appropriate skills, knowledge, and experience to contribute to the effective direction of NOCSI, who can exercise independent and informed judgment on matters that come to the board and who are free of any business or other relationships that may interfere with the exercise of that individual judgment.

This includes the independence of Board Members. All board members will take their seats on the board as independents and not as representatives of their NFs or business interests that may be associated with.

All board members are required to disclose any conflicts of interest at their first board meeting and all relevant information that may affect their independence.

An Officer or member of the Executive Board shall not be eligible for appointment as a delegate of an affiliate to the General Assembly of NOCSI.

In Articles 15 and 20 of the NOCSI constitution, there is a strong emphasis on transparency using the media.

It is stated that unless otherwise directed by the President or the Secretary-General or CEO, communication on behalf of NOCSI with the media and the public must be made only by the GS or CEO or the President or specifically designated representatives of NOCSI.

The President may speak on behalf of NOCSI on governance issues and its strategic direction. The GS or CEO is authorized to speak on all aspects of NOCSI other than governance. If any other Board Member receives any inquiry relating to NOCSI, he or she should decline to comment and ask them to call the President or GS/CEO.

In Article 20, it is stated that the GS or CEO shall, on the directives of the Executive Board, issue notices of meetings by radio, printed media, and in writing stating the date, time, place, and the matters to be discussed. This includes a 7-day notice for Executive Board Meetings and a 30-day notice for Annual, Extraordinary, or Special General Assembly meetings.

However, the ongoing blacklisting of media, delay tactics, and failure to respond to media queries remain top issues at the NOCSI.
Even the notice for the upcoming AGM was never published on radio, TV, or in print.

Instead, the NOCSI published the notice and backdated it to November 7th on their social media page (Facebook).

SOLOMON KINGS STARTS PREPARATION

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

SOLOMON Kings Football Club (FC) has begun preparations for the OFC Pro League set to kick off next year.

Their first training session was held at the National Stadium.

Head Coach Ben Cahn told SunSPORTS that the team consists of 18 outfield players and three goalkeepers.

“We still have two more players to arrive,” Cahn told SunSPORTS.

He mentioned that the first league game is on the 18th of January 2026, so they don't have much time to prepare.

“So we have a lot of work to do in a short time. However, it was good in the first training session, especially to see the level of the players and introduce them to how we want to play and the direction we want to go in,” he said.

Cahn said the coaching staff is excited to be here and do their best for the people of the Solomon Islands.

He is ready to share his experience with Kings from Japanese club FC Tiamo Hirakata as well as in the A-League, NPL and the Victorian Premier League 1.

Cahn has spent most of his career coaching in Australian clubs like Central Coast Mariners FC and Brisbane Roar FC in the A-League, as well as Olympic FC in the Australian NPL and Melbourne Knights in the Victorian Premier League 1, before moving to the Japanese club FC Tiamo Hirakata.

Cahn mentioned that they will train every day until the 19th of December before taking a break for Christmas.

“After Christmas, the team will travel to Brisbane for a series of training camps before heading to Auckland for the first circuit of the OFC Pro-League 2026,” Cahn told SunSPORTS.

He mentioned positive feedback from the players after their first training session.

“They are great boys and have given everything. They care a lot about the nation and the club,” he said.

Cahn encourages the players, noting the importance of setting a standard for future generations and showing the kids of the Solomon Islands what's possible.

“We have a lot of work to do. We'll work really hard in training, and I have no doubt that they will reach where we need them to go,” Cahn told SunSPORTS.

Assisting him in the role are former Brisbane Roar assistant coach and Wynnum Wolves FC Football Director, Richard Greer, as well as Sunshine Coast Wanderers coach Alex Barlow.

Local coaches supporting them include two former national team defenders, Coach Ian Lagwai Kalu, and Gideon Omokirio.

Training sessions will continue weekly, with Sundays reserved for recovery.

CAHN TAKES CHARGE OF KINGS

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

FORMER FC Tiamo Hirakata Coach Ben Cahn will be in charge of Solomon Kings FC for the inaugural OFC Pro League slated to kick off next year.

The Australian/British coach is an experienced coach previously known for his work with Central Coast FC, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Knights, and Olympic FC.

He arrived in Honiara on Wednesday afternoon.

Cahn get down to business in Solomon Kings FC's first training session at the National Stadium yesterday.

He told SunSPORTS that he’s ready to take up the challenge, especially when it comes at very short notice.

He said his appointment happened really quickly, but he enjoyed the welcoming environment.

“It's a brand new team, so it's been quite a rush to get it started and to get everything ready for our first session. However, they were excellent today with a lot of positive signs,” he said.

Cahn explained that the first session is always difficult for players because they're nervous.

“They want to impress a new coach, although we tried to give them new ideas and a new way of training. So, it's very difficult for them to adapt,” Cahn said.

But the coaching staff told the boys that there's no real pressure on the first session to ensure they must deliver a high standard of performance, but to continue working. Cahn said their mentality is there, but we have to condition them now to work at the level we want and to bring the playing style to how we want to play.

He thanked the ongoing partnership between the Solomon Islands Federation (SIFF) and Wynnum Wolves FC for making his appointment possible.

“There’s been so much work going on over the last six or seven months in the background that people don't see and they'll never see. But all the guys at SIFF and at Wynnum have worked so hard just to make this first training session possible and to give us the chance to go to Auckland for that first game,” he said.

Cahn extends special appreciation to sponsors because a football club cannot run without sponsors.

“For the companies, especially the local companies that have got behind us and supported us, we want to say thank you to them and we want to say that we're going to give everything to make Solomon Kings as successful as possible to help their company's affiliation with us,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cahn led FC Tiamo Hirakata, a Japanese Football League (JFL) club, to maintain the club's rank in 4th place this season out of 16 teams with a record of 15 wins, 5 draws, and 10 losses.

He is known for promoting an attractive, possession-based style of play.

FC Tiamo Hirakata competes in the JFL, which is the fourth tier of the Japanese football league system.

The Japanese tier 4 is the semi-professional and amateur football league in Japan.

SURFING AGAINST GBV

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

THE Western Solomon Surfing Association (WSSA), Women Make Waves (WMW) program is making progress with community initiatives in the Western Province.

One of its successful programs rolled out this year through a partnership with the Family Support Center (FSC) is the delivery of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness in schools.

WSSA female coach Leah Duncan said that their round of school awareness visits focuses on creating understanding and encouraging open conversations around GBV with school students.
Duncan mentioned that WSSA is not only focusing on surfing but also visiting schools to deliver awareness.

She thanked the partnership with FSC for delivering interactive sessions that helped students learn about respect, safety, healthy relationships, and where to seek help.

She noted the importance of giving school students the opportunity to understand GBV early to ensure they feel safe and empowered.

Duncan expressed gratitude to all the students and teachers who engaged with them in the program, which aims to build safer, stronger communities for young people.

The Women Make Waves program in the Solomon Islands, supported by Australia's Team Up initiative, uses surfing to empower women and girls, promote gender equality, and prevent gender-based violence (GBV) in the Western Province.

It combines surfing lessons with leadership training, health education (including GBV), and community building. The program partners with local groups like the WSSA and SurfAid to create safe, inclusive spaces for women and drive societal change through sport.

CIFA CONCLUDES SAVO JUST PLAY PROGRAM

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

MORE than 100 young participants from six communities gathered at Pokilo Playing Ground for the closing of the Savo Just Play program this year.

The Central Islands Football Association (CIFA) concluded this year's Savo Just Play program in North Savo on Saturday, bringing together representatives from key government and sporting organizations to celebrate the initiative's success.

The closing ceremony was attended by representatives from the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), Honiara City Council (HCC), and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF).

The event brought together participants from six surrounding centers including Zapaniata, Kuila, Sisiaka, Balola, Panueli, and Pokilo, with more than 100 students aged 6 to 16 years old taking part in the closing activities.

Savo Just Play Coordinator Ataban Tonezepo commended the program while thanking all the representing bodies for the positive outcome achieved this year.

The program concluded with light refreshments and the presentation of school items to the six participating centers.
HCC Youth, Women, and Sport Division Director Gabriel Riotarau served as guest speaker for the closing ceremony, which also marked the 16 Days of Activism for Women and Girls campaign.

The SIFF delegation in attendance included Vanessa Kausimae, Eric Wanega, and Claudia Votu, demonstrating the federation's ongoing commitment to grassroots football development.

The Just Play Team Up program uses football to deliver important life skills, promote gender equality, disability inclusion, and healthy living among children and youth. Supported by Australia's Team Up development initiative, the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), and the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), the initiative provides coaches with training, organizes local festivals, and spreads messages about respect, hygiene (WASH), and positive behaviors.

The program continues to make a significant difference in communities across the Solomon Islands, extending its impact well beyond sports skills to foster positive social change and youth development.

FEMALE HOCKEY FESTIVAL IGNITES PASSION

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

THE International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women’s World Youth Festival Camp commenced yesterday at the King George Sixth (KGVI) National Hockey Center.

The four-day event is facilitated by top trainers and coaches from Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, with the support of regional coaches from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Tonga.

FIH Trainer Gill Gemming said that hosting the event in Honiara for the first time provides a great opportunity for female hockey prospects in the region.

Gemming mentioned that talent camps like this are usually hosted in Europe, but this is the first time it has been offered to Oceania.

"This is quite a unique opportunity and it’s funded by the FIH through the Olympic Solidarity. So we've gone a little bit different from other continents by upholding our strategy, which is about providing more opportunities for girls and women, and particularly safeguarding and ensuring they have safe equipment, safe transport, and enjoy themselves when they're involved in sports.

“So we decided we would make it a girls' and women's only camp," Gemming said.

She added that the first day sessions have been going really well, filled with a lot of excitement, especially with the reactions from the visiting participants.

"We were worried about whether they would want to stay with their Solomon Islands mates. They’ve accepted that they want to learn and share, and so they've taken all the first day sessions really well," she said.

Meanwhile, the event will deliver workshops and skills sessions for two days, followed by Hockey 5 competitions on Thursday and Friday.

"Their coaches from the Pacific Islands will be coaching the teams, and the two international coaches will help and mentor them and support them. So this is quite a unique opportunity. So we decided that we would mix the teams, and we'd also put them out of their comfort zone a little bit. We’ve got all six Pacific Island members here, and they're learning from each other and sharing, and it'll be really fun to see how they combine on Thursday and Friday," Gemming added.

The festival brings together participants from six member associations, including Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea. The majority of the participants come from the host country, the Solomon Islands.
