Discussions are underway for the establishment of a permanent morgue facility at Kiluโ€™ufi Hospital, with the Provincial Health Director saying the facility would help better support families and strengthen health services in Malaita Province.

In an interview with Tavuli News during the official handover of the upgraded Kiluโ€™ufi Hospital, Provincial Health Director Dr David Danitofea said discussions have begun with the Provincial Secretary to develop plans on how the idea of building a morgue for the hospital can be progressed.

โ€œI just had a discussion with the provincial secretary recently to work together and develop plans on how to manage this discussion to push for the idea to build a morgue for Kiluโ€™ufi Hospital.โ€

A major upgrade to healthcare services in Malaita Province was officially marked with the handover of the Kilu'ufi Hospital Improvement Project.

Valued at SBD$130 million, the project includes new outpatient and emergency facilities, operating theatres, a birthing suite, medical imaging services, a pharmacy dispensary, and expanded support services.

The development also features new clinical and maternity buildings aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery across the province.

During the ceremony, Minister of Health Morris Toiraena acknowledged the Government and people of Japan for their support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Minister also recognised former Health Ministers and the Permanent Secretary for their roles in initiating and prioritising the project.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services, through its Health Promotion Department, has commenced a five-day training workshop in Honiara to strengthen the Provincial Healthy Settings Advocacy and Mobilization initiative.
The workshop, which began on Monday, aims to enhance leadership, partnerships, and community action to address key health challenges across the provinces.

THE Government acknowledges the statement issued by the Leader of the Official Opposition in respect of the investigation into the 33-bauxite shipment from Rennell Island.

The Government is committed to ensuring that the investigation is conducted professionally, impartially and within the ambits of the law.

The investigation which was first announced on 10th June 2026 remains active.

0n 6th July 2026, the relevant stakeholders/authorities met for the first time to assess the records gathered up to that date and to identify documents that are yet to be collected.
