KUKU CONFIRMS SACKING!

KUKU: I ACCEPT AND RESPECT THE DECISION

Terminated government Minister for Education & Human Resources Development, John Dean Kuku says he accepts and respect the decision by PM Sogavare.

"If you look at the trend of the sacking/termination of government ministers, it is to do with our decision to abstain from the Caucus/Cabinet vote over the China switch.

“But I accept and respect the decision to be sacked.”

“There are many issues to talk about regarding my termination. We will talk about those issues later,” Mr Kuku said, in a telephone interview just hours after he received his marching order.

Gov’t signs 4b Yen airport project with Japan

THE Government has signed a milestone agreement with the Japanese Government for the improvement of the Honiara International Airport Project yesterday in Tokyo.

Minister of Foreign Affairs & External Trade Milner Tozaka and the Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono officially signed the agreement at the Japanese Foreign Affairs Office.

During the signing ceremony, Minister Tozaka acknowledged the Government of Japan for its unwavering support in infrastructure development.

The four billion three hundred and sixty-four million Japanese Yen (4,364,000,000), is directed towards the upgrading the Honiara International Airport.

“I would like to express through you, our gratitude towards your Government for the continuous support rendered to us through the volunteers, Grassroots projects and more importantly the country’s infrastructure development ambitions,” he said.

Tozaka said Japan remains the leading infrastructure development partner in Solomon Islands.

Therefore, he said the Solomon Islands Government welcomes the continuous cooperation and support by the Japanese Government.

“I want to thank you on behalf of the Government of this milestone achievement,’’ Tozaka said.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Kono in response said the improvement of the Honiara International Airport is Japan’s desire to see sustainable development through infrastructure programs in the Solomon Islands.

He said this project will also supplement the current Kukum Highway Infrastructure programme.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Foreign Minister has also congratulated Solomon Islands for opening a tourism office in Japan.

Kono said his office together with other relevant agencies will make sure Solomon Islands tourism is promoted in Japan.

CGASI breaches gov’t procedure, asking for $679k uniform assistance

THE Commonwealth Games Association of Solomon Islands (CGASI) is now under the spotlight, after being caught breaching the government’s procurement procedure, when forwarding an invoice of SBD$679, 925.00 asking for Uniform assistance.
This was for the official wear for the country’s Commonwealth Games 2018 contingent to Gold Coast, in Australia, next month.
SNM sighted the invoice, from a local supplier and was addressed to the Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Mr George Palua, dated 6th March, 2018.

NOTE

Congratulations, we have reached the 1,000 Mark. The SNM Admin would like to give credit to the 1,058 people that have clicked 'Like' on this page.

In showing our appreciation to all of you, we will be publishing stories from our past SNM Issues, as of today.

About the SNM

The National Star comes at the back of our 35 years of successful newspaper publication.
It’s a new public space that Solomon Islanders can use to promote the good things that are happening in our rural communities.
Frankly, the focus of coverage of this news magazine will be on our rural communities.
Each month, we’ll send our reporters out to interview and report on the good things that are happening within our rural areas.
We felt our rural areas have not been well-covered by the mainstream media.
It was on that basis that we decided to dedicate this new publication to our rural people.
We want their success stories, as well as their daily struggles and challenges, to be recorded and brought to a wider audience.
It was said about 80 per cent of the nation’s population lived in the rural areas.
Yet, the rural area is also the most neglected when it comes to development.
This is why young people are migrating in their droves to Honiara each year in search of jobs and other economic opportunities that essentially, do not exist.
This trend must be reversed.
As a national news organisation, we are prepared to be part of any government effort that promotes rural development and offers social and economic opportunities for our people to remain in their provinces.
By focusing our coverage on rural news and development, we are giving our rural people the opportunity and right to be heard and recognised.
We hope you will be part of us in this effort.
We invite Solomon Islanders to make use of this space.
Send us your views of the kind of development you want to see in the rural areas.
We would also welcome your feedback and suggestions on this publication. So feel free to drop us an email or a letter and let us know what you think.
We promise to take your suggestions seriously so that together we can improve this news magazine and our coverage of our rural areas.
Please take some times to read the many thoughtful features presented in this inaugural issue.

Enjoy your reading!

SHARZY IS BACK

Sharzy’s ‘One Summer’ album set for launching

SOLOMON Islands music sensation and Aelan music king ‘Sharzy’ is set to release his new album entitled ‘One Summer’, by the end of April.

After some years of promoting other local and international artists, the native icon told the SNM that he is set to release his 7th album this year.

Speaking exclusively to the Star National Magazine, Samson Saeni ‘Sharzy’ said the new album will be something totally different, from what he was known for.

“The music style is under a world music genre, but targets the international market.

“I’ve tried to do something that we the pacific musicians are capable of doing.

“It’s not Aelan music after all, but we pushed the trend up a bit,” he said.

He added, he will be releasing the Album in Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia, and three locations in Australia.

“It will be released in Port Vila, around 5th May.

“It will be launched also in Australia in May, on three locations, Cairns, Brisbane, and Sydney.”

According to the Simbo, Malaita grandee, he is already eyeing the digital market.

He said, his fans can only access songs from the album via itunes, as it will be released under Mangrove Production on digital only, and not on CDs.

“This happens because of the strategic marketing we faced in the music industry,” Sharzy explicated.

Sharzy’s ‘One Summer’ album is produced by Desmond Piniau, a.k.a ‘Dee Beats’, who is also, part Tolai in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Malaita. The producer is based in Honiara, but went over to PNG for the project.

The recording was done at Big Time Production in POM City, owned by Solomon Islands very own Floyd Manata, also known as ‘Funky’.

While in Solomon Islands to launch his album, Sharzy said he will only stage two shows in Gizo and Noro, Western Province since he will spend most of his time at home (Gizo).

After leaving the country, he will be teaming up with Pati Potts Doi of PNG, for their Vanuatu tour.

Asked what he has been doing over the passing years, Sharzy said he was just doing music, and helping to promote other artists in tours across the Pacific.

He said, music is always part of his life and he always keeps doing what he does best.

Sharzy was born on the island of Simbo in the Western Province. His mother is from Simbo and his father from Malaita. His musical career began in 1995 when he joined the 2-4-1 band.

He produced his first solo album "Aloha" in 2001, which became an instant hit. Since then he has released "Aelan feel'n" (2003), "Aelan Wei" (Pijin for "island way") (2008), "Hem Stret" (2008), "Yumi Flo" (2009) and "Iu Mi Flow" (2010).

He sings in many languages including Simbo, Roviana, and Solomon Islands Pijin. He also has tracks in Tok Pisin and English.

He has been described by The Guardian as one of the Solomon Islands' "living national icons".

Sharzy currently resides up Eastern Highlands, Goroka Province in PNG.
