YOUTH URGED TO LEAD | On International Youth Day 2025, Australia Awards scholar Simaema Neilsen is calling on young Solomon Islanders to lead positive change in their communities. Simaema, who is from Guadalcanal and Western Province, is studying for her Master of International Business in Australia. She believes that education, strong values, and action can help young people build a better and more inclusive Solomon Islands. In her message, she encouraged youth to believe in themselves, speak up, and take small steps that can lead to big changes. Her goals include helping young people, women, and small businesses learn digital skills and promoting gender equality and economic growth. She says youth have a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in education and gender equality. WOMEN LEADING MARITIME GROWTH | In the Solomon Islands, sea transport is very important for connecting communities and helping the economy grow. One company leading the way is Franjti Shipping, run by Mrs. Joy Isihanua Ririmae. Joy shared her story with Pacific Tenders Magazine, describing how she started the business, the challenges she faces, and her hope for more women to join the shipping industry. Franjti Shipping runs cargo and passenger ships, helping people and businesses in Malaita, Western Province, and Honiara. Joy balances her work and family life while managing ship maintenance and rising fuel costs. Inspired by her late father, a seafarer, Joy continues his legacy and pushes for more support and investment in the maritime sector. She also supports green initiatives and hopes for a sustainable future for Pacific ports, especially with climate change threats. Her journey shows that women can lead and succeed in industries once dominated by men, helping both people and the planet.

MATERNITY WARD EMERGENCY MODE | Starting August 12, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at National Referral Hospital’s (NRH) will go into Emergency Mode. This is because the Labour Ward is unsafe due to a ceiling risk. A temporary Labour Ward will be set up in the Acute Postnatal Ward while repairs are made. There will be fewer beds and a higher risk of infection, so only limited visitors are allowed. Pregnant mothers should bring only one bag, and nurses and security will help manage the area. NRH is planning to build a new Maternity complex in the future to improve care.

RAISE MARRIAGE AGE NOW | Vois Blong Mere Solomon (VBMSI) has welcomed the government’s plan to amend the Marriage Act 1945 and raise the legal marriage age from 15 to 18 years. Vois Blong Mere says the change is long overdue and vital for protecting girls' rights and futures. "Our children deserve better. Their future starts with the right to just be children," the group said in a public statement. They highlighted alarming figures from the Endim Vaelens Agenstim Pikinini report, showing that 1 in 5 girls in Solomon Islands marry before 18—rising to 1 in 4 in rural areas. "These are not just statistics. These are our daughters, sisters, and future leaders," the statement added. Vois Blong Mere supports leaders driving the change and says it brings national law in line with the legal voting age and international child protection standards. They called on the public to stand united to end child marriage and ensure girls have full access to education, health, and opportunity.
