APPEAL FOR VIOLENCE SAFE SHELTER | The Western Provincial Council of Women (WPCW) is calling for a dedicated safe house in Western Province to support survivors of violence and people in distress. WPCW Coordinator Nanette Panda raised the concern during an interview with the Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association (SIPPA) at a recent Joint Stakeholder Planning Meeting. “As one of the major SAFENET service providers in Western Province, having a safe house is a major need,” Mrs Panda said. She said many victims in the province, including mothers, children, and people with mental health challenges, are still without proper care facilities. “We have many people who are mentally distressed and many issues emerging in our communities, but we still do not have the facilities to properly care for and support these victims,” she said. Mrs Panda said stakeholders have discussed the issue many times and agree that a safe house is urgently needed to provide protection, counselling, and health support. “We really need a facility based here where services such as counselling can be provided, and where qualified health professionals can attend to victims,” she said. She added that the recent meeting helped strengthen partnerships and improve coordination among organisations working on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) response. Mrs Panda also thanked SIPPA for leading efforts to bring partners together to plan and improve services for survivors. “We look forward to working closely with SIPPA and all our partners,” she said. She said the meeting strengthened teamwork and renewed commitment to better support vulnerable people in Western Province.

TRAINING PLANNED TO COMBAT VIOLENCE | Women and girls in Western Province may soon receive stronger protection and support as new efforts are made to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). The Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association (Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association), through its EmpowerHER Project (EmpowerHER Project), has completed a four-day Joint Stakeholder Planning Meeting in Gizo. The meeting brought together government agencies, civil society groups, SAFENET service providers, and SolTuna, to improve services for survivors of violence. Held at the Western Provincial Council of Women’s Office in Gizo, participants from Gizo and Noro shared experiences, discussed challenges, and suggested solutions. They also reviewed referral systems, prevention work, and ways to improve community response. EmpowerHER Project Officer Viann Vosoto said the meeting helped improve training plans for CARE Committee members. She said stakeholder input will be used to strengthen training materials in the coming weeks. Western Provincial Council of Women Coordinator Nanette Panda said teamwork among partners is important to reach survivors and improve services. A key outcome of the meeting was agreement to hold joint training for CARE Committee members in nine communities. This is expected to strengthen community prevention and improve how survivors are referred for help. The initiative continues to support safer communities and better protection for women and girls in Western Province.
