SOLOMON & PACIFIC WOMEN SHAPE EQUALITY | From September 22 to 26, women leaders from the Solomon Islands joined others from the Pacific at a workshop in Fiji. They worked together to create better plans for gender equality that help women and girls. The workshop, called the Annual Reflection and Analysis Workshop (ARAW), had over 130 people from the region. It was part of Pacific Women Lead, a program funded by Australia to support gender equality in the Pacific. Lorio Sisiolo from the Family Support Centre said the sessions helped her learn how to include people with disabilities and young people, who have strong voices. Pacific Women Lead invests AUD $120 million over five years in the Solomon Islands. It supports groups like Family Support Centre and Malaita Christian Care Centre to stop violence and help survivors. The program also helps health, justice, and social services to support women’s rights and include all voices.

WOMEN LEADERS BUILD NETWORK | Twenty-five women from various sectors in Solomon Islands completed the Senior Women in Executive Leadership Program on 9 October 2025. Delivered by Women in Executive Leadership Solomon Islands (WELSI), the four-day training helped participants build confidence, leadership skills, and professional networks. Participants like Christina Palusi from Our Telekom and Freda Tamu from Solomon Power said the most valuable takeaway was the strong support network formed during the program. They also gained insights on mentoring, workplace risk management, and career development. The training aims to help more women step into senior roles and board positions. Certificates will be awarded at a graduation ceremony on 16 October, which also marks WELSI’s one-year anniversary.

ANNIE HOMELO SHARES PASSION | Balancing roots that stretch across Western, Guadalcanal, Choiseul, and Malaita, Annie Homelo brings a blend of strength, grace, and determination every time she steps on the court. Playing as a Small/Power Forward, Annie’s journey in sport is one built on faith, family, and fierce passion. She’s proudly represented Solomon Islands three times — debuting in netball at the 2023 Pacific Games, competing in U23 3x3 basketball at the Palau Mini Games, and now, stepping up once again for the FIBA Melanesian Cup 2025 — her first time representing the country in 5x5 basketball. “This means I get to step on the court not just for myself, but for my home — Solomon Islands,” Annie says. “It’s about showcasing my passion for basketball and the passion of every youth baller in Solo. And it’s about standing with my teammates — strong women who’ve trained through challenges but stayed committed.” When asked who inspires her most, Annie doesn’t hesitate. Sure, she admires WNBA star Paige Bueckers for her skill and drive, but her true role models are much closer to home — her mum and dad. “They don’t play basketball, but they’ve always been beside the court like they did,” she laughs. “They’ve never missed a training. They saw potential in me and made sure it turned into something amazing with their endless support.” That family dedication fuels her every game. The night before a match, Annie settles into her routine — watching WNBA games on YouTube, praying, listening to music, and staying off social media to stay mentally locked in. Off the court, she’s pursuing her studies in Foundation Science at University of South Pacific, proving that hard work doesn’t stop when the final whistle blows. And when it comes to advice for the next generation of female ballers, Annie keeps it simple but powerful: “Keep praying and keep playing. Basketball is such an amazing sport — keep training to be the best version of yourself, and never forget that God will straighten your path. Do both, and you might end up representing your country one day too.” With faith as her guide, family as her foundation, and basketball as her passion, Annie Homelo is a shining example of what it means to play for love, pride, and purpose.

SHEPHIA MANU MAKES DEBUT | Stepping onto the court at the FIBA Melanesian Cup, Shephia Tolina Manu carries more than just a basketball — she carries heart, and heritage with every game she plays. “Representing my country in this FIBA Mela Cup means representing my Church, families, communities, Provinces, and my lovely Country Solomon Islands.” Though this is her first time wearing the national jersey on the international stage, Shephia carries the pride of her people with every stride. Her journey is fueled by faith, family, and a fierce love for the game. Shephia draws inspiration from Natala Tepuke—a player known for her discipline, skill, and unwavering support both on and off the court. “She encourages me and shows what it means to be a true athlete.” Before each match, Shephia locks in with positive self-talk, visualizing her moves, and tuning out distractions. Her mindset is her secret weapon. When she’s not training, Shephia is deeply involved in her Church and caring for her family. Her life is a beautiful balance of service, sport, and spirituality. While she hasn’t listed specific goals, her presence alone speaks volumes—she’s here to grow, compete, and make her people proud. “Respect others and discipline will guide you to become a role model in basketball or athlete.”

LYNNE TAKES LEAD TO TRANSFORM TIVULU | The Tivulu community in Munda, Western Province, has greatly improved access to clean water thanks to a community-led project. Led by Australia Awards graduate Lynne Suti, four water tanks with guttering systems were installed in July 2025. This has ended long, unsafe water collection trips, especially for women and children. The project also supports sustainable farming, helping families raise pigs, poultry, and grow crops, improving food security and income. Community members say the tanks bring hope, reduce daily burdens, and create better opportunities for future generations. This initiative highlights how the Australia Awards Alumni Support Grant empowers alumni to create lasting community benefits.

COACH STRESSES MORE CONFIDENCE | Solomon Islands Women's Basketball Team Head Coach, Gregory Ofia, spoke to the media after their match against New Caledonia. Even though the team lost 63-30, he saw positives in the performance. “We lost our first game but it was a positive match,” Coach Ofia said. “We lost in the first two quarters and came back strong in the second half. But there is a need for the girls to be more confident.” He believes the players have talent but lack confidence and experience due to limited local competition. “Our girls have the skills but need more confidence,” he added. Coach Ofia said the team must improve in key areas like shooting and scoring. “We need to work more on their shooting and scoring, and for sure it will require a lot of work,” he said.
He also pointed out the importance of gaining experience and staying positive. “Representing the country and gaining experience is crucial for better games in the future,” he said.
