FIRE DESTROYS MASSOLO PROPERTY | A massive fire broke out on Thursday at Ranadi in east Honiara, destroying Massolo Logging Company and parts of damaging Xiang Lin Timber Company nearby. The fire burned down Massolo's staff house, two vehicles, a container storage, and the security guard house. Property belonging to Xiang Lin Timber was also damaged, though the full extent is still being assessed. Esther Lalakwa, a housemaid for Massolo, witnessed the fire. The fire is believed to have started from an electrical fault. Massolo’s manager, William Wei, said he was thankful that no lives were lost. Wei estimated the damage to Massolo property to be around SBD 600,000 to 700,000. Responsible Authority are still investigating the cause and full impact of the fire on both companies.

SIBC ARCHIVES RETURNED DIGITISED | Australia has returned the first batch of digitised radio archives to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) in Honiara. This is a big step in saving the country’s oldest radio recordings. The project is part of the Solomon Islands–Australia Media Sector Partnership, with help from ABC International Development and SIBC. It aims to protect and preserve historical broadcasts for future generations. So far, 200 boxes of tapes were sent to Australia to be cleaned, repaired, and digitised. The first batch of 200 recordings has now been returned. More restored files are expected to come back next year.

VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN COSTLY | At a recent Child Protection Partners Dialogue in Honiara, Dr. Cedrick Alependava, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, shared shocking findings: violence against children costs the Solomon Islands $1.116 billion each year — about a quarter of the national budget. The event, held at Heritage Park Hotel, was supported by UNICEF and included groups like WHO, Save the Children, Seif Ples, and other government and community organisations. Together, they discussed how to better protect children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The Solomon Islands has signed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and this event, themed “Investing in Child Protection for a Safer and Secure Future for Children in Solomon Islands,” highlighted the urgent need to take action and invest in child protection.

PROFESSOR AQORAU SPEAKS GLOBALLY | Professor Transform Aqorau, Vice Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), on Monday, 6 October 2025, gave a speech in Tokyo, Japan. He spoke at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation’s Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) programme. His talk was called “Cooperation and the Sustainable Development of Indo-Pacific Tuna Fisheries.” He shared how the Pacific Islands help protect the ocean and manage tuna fishing responsibly. “The Pacific may be small in land, but large in ocean,” said Professor Aqorau. He explained how Pacific countries created smart ways to control tuna fishing, like the Parties to the Nauru Agreement (PNA) and the Vessel Day Scheme (VDS). These ideas helped countries earn more money and protect fish for the future. He also spoke about new ideas like the Blue Pacific Fisheries Standard, and local fish processing projects such as Bina Harbour and East New Britain Initiative (ENBi). Climate change is a big problem, he warned, because warming oceans push tuna away from Pacific waters. He called for teamwork, climate action, and fair rules. “Tuna must not only feed our economies—it must feed our vision,” he said. His talk showed that SINU is helping lead the way in ocean policy and sustainable development.
