BASKETBALL CUP PLANS PROGRESS | The Solomon Islands is preparing to host the first-ever FIBA Melanesian Cup 2025, with everything on track for the big event from October 13 to 18 at Friendship Hall. “We’re ready,” said event chairlady Gloria Hong, “but we’re still adjusting a few things, especially around team arrivals.” Teams from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu are expected between October 10 and 12. Most players will stay at the SINU Campus, with Fiji staying at Henderson Sky Residence. “We’re still finalizing rooms for PNG and New Caledonia based on their flight times,” Hong said. Tickets will cost a flat $20, with 1,300 tickets sold per day due to space limits. “We wanted 1,500,” Hong said, “but 200 seats will go to VIPs and teams. That’s why fans must buy tickets early.” Tickets will be sold Monday to Saturday at a tent near the entrance. “If the 1,300 tickets are sold, then all seats are gone,” Hong warned. A local security firm will manage the venue. “We’ll also add volunteers and talk to the police (RSIPF) to help with crowd control,” Hong said. 30 volunteers will assist in logistics, catering, and support roles. Hong is confident in the country’s first major basketball event. “I don’t think it may turn bad,” she said with a smile. The Melanesian Cup is set to deliver six days of exciting games between regional rivals — a big step for basketball in the Solomon Islands.

ROAR BUILD, INSPIRE FUTURE | Brisbane Roar FC coach Michael Valkanis says the club's match against the Solomon Islands this Saturday is about more than just preparation — it's also about making a difference. “One of the most important things is if we can inspire the next generation of Solomon Island players and create a pathway for them, then we've made an impact already,” Valkanis said at today’s press conference. With only weeks to go before the A-League season kicks off, Valkanis sees the game as vital for Brisbane’s pre-season. “We knew this would be a very good challenge for us… playing a premier national team from the Pacific Islands,” he said. He added, “It's a tremendous opportunity for us to continue our preparation for the A-League, but also to start this partnership with the Solomon Islands in this PacificAus Sports Challenge.”

SOLOMON COACH WELCOMES OPPORTUNITY | Ahead of their match against Brisbane Roar FC this Saturday, Solomon Islands National Senior Men’s Team coach Josh Smith expressed gratitude for the rare chance to face a professional side. “Look, it's very difficult for us to get high level international games with the amount of funding we have,” Smith said at today’s press conference. “So to have a team like Brisbane here, full professional side, is an amazing opportunity at this PacificAus Sports Challenge for our players and our staff to learn and to grow.” He hopes the experience leads to long-term benefits. “We hope that in the future we can continue the partnership and change a lot of lives… and take Solomon football back to the top of Oceania,” Smith added. The match offers key preparation for both teams ahead of their respective upcoming seasons. For the Solomon Islands, their last competitive game was a 1-3 loss to Papua New Guinea in December 2023. The national team coach sees this challenge as a crucial preparation step for the upcoming fourth edition of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup will be held in Port Moresby from 10 - 22 October 2025.

BRISBANE ROAR FACES TEST | The PacificAus Sports Challenge is capturing attention ahead of this Saturday’s big match between the Solomon Islands national team and Brisbane Roar FC. Brisbane Roar FC, coached by Michael Valkanis since May 2025, finished 12th in the recent A-League season. Valkanis shared at today’s press conference that the team, largely youthful, faces a tough challenge against the Solomon Islands’ full-strength squad. “It will be tricky, no doubt about that,” Valkanis said. “We’re putting our younger players into a real test here — a senior international side, with experienced professionals, physical presence, and national pride at stake. But that’s what we want. These are the environments where players grow.” He stressed the match is more about growth and preparation than just the result.
