LAST season's runner-up, Henderson Hammerhead Sharks Rugby Club (RC), has secured a coveted spot in the grand final of the Honiara Rugby Union Association (HRUA) Men’s 15s Premier Championship 2025.

The Sharks clinched their place in the final with a thrilling 20-19 victory over Usotasi Leopards RC in the second semifinal held at Town Ground Rugby Stadium yesterday evening.

Coach Philemon Campbell expressed pride in the team's performance, acknowledging the challenges they faced throughout the match.

“I’m very grateful for the win today. We came up with a game plan focusing on our forward approach. Obviously, we faced a lot of challenges in the semifinal, but we managed to capitalize on our final kick of the match to earn the win,” Campbell said.

The Sharks led 17-8 at halftime, but the Leopards fought back fiercely in the second half, narrowing the gap. In a tense finish, the Leopards held a slim 19-18 lead in the dying moments of the game.

However, a crucial penalty taken by Captain Bobby Sade in the final seconds secured a dramatic 20-19 victory for the Sharks, sending the Leopards to the third-place playoffs against Tavuli Giants RC.
Looking ahead to the final, scheduled for Thursday, August 28, Campbell emphasized the importance of recovery and preparation.

“We will work on our weak areas from the semifinal and hope to improve in time before the final,” he added.

The Sharks will face off against the defending champions, South Pacific Oil Limited (SPOL), Avaiki RC, in a highly anticipated rematch of last season's final, where Avaiki emerged victorious with a score of 17-10.

The team is eager to replicate their success from the 2022 season, where they claimed their first title by defeating Avaiki 14-10 in the final of the HRUA Solrais Men’s 15s Grand Premier Championship.

The grand final of the HRUA Men’s 15s Championship 2025 is set for Thursday, August 28, at 4:00 PM, while the third-place playoff between Tavuli Giants RC and Usotasi Leopards RC will take place on Wednesday, August 27.

The Sharks have reached another grand final showdown without the inclusion of any regional guest players, showcasing the depth of local talent within the team.

….Katukatu knocked out Samoa from contention

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

THE Solomon Islands U16 Men’s team, known as the Katukatu, delivered a commanding performance with a 4-0 victory over Samoa in their second group match of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Men’s U16 Championship 2025.

The win puts them in a crucial position as they prepare to face defending champions New Zealand in their final group match, where a victory is essential for advancing to the semifinals.

After a disappointing 5-2 loss to New Caledonia in their opening match, the Henry Fa’arodo Jnr coached-side showed resilience and determination at the National Stadium yesterday.

Charles Daomae who scored two goals in the win over Samoa expressed pride for the win, especially in front of a supportive home crowd.

“It’s so exciting to win in front of our fans and families. Scoring at home is always the best feeling,” Daomae said.

He also thanked supporters both locally and abroad for their encouragement.

The match against Samoa was a must-win for the Katukatu, who needed to keep their semifinal hopes alive in Group B.

Despite several attempts from Junior Sam, Junior Ben, and Daomae to pe*****te the Samoa defense in the first half, the teams went into halftime at a 0-0 stalemate.

Samoa had its share of opportunities, but the Solomon Islands' improved defensive strategy forced them to rethink their attacking approach.

The hosts regrouped at halftime and returned with renewed vigor, focusing on finishing their chances.

Junior Sam broke the deadlock in the 57th minute with a well-placed penalty, marking his second goal of the tournament.

Daomae then extended the lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse.

As Samoa struggled to contain the pressure, Daomae scored again in the 75th minute, making it 3-0. Sam capped off the scoring with his third goal of the tournament in the 80th minute, sealing the 4-0 victory and eliminating Samoa from contention.

With this crucial win, the Katukatu remain in the race for a semifinal spot, setting the stage for a decisive clash against New Zealand.

The match is scheduled for Sunday at the National Stadium, with kickoff set for 3:00 PM.

AVAIKI WAITS FOR RIVAL

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

DEFENDING champions South Pacific Oil (SPOL), Avaiki Rugby Club (RC), have secured their place in the grand final of the Honiara Rugby Union (HRUA) Men’s 15s Premier Championship 2025, after a hard-fought 17-14 victory over Tavuli Giants RC in the first semifinal at Town Ground Rugby Stadium yesterday evening.

They will now await the winner of the second semifinal, which features Usotasi Leopards RC and Henderson Hammerheads RC, set to kick off this evening.

Avaiki's coach, Leslie Puia, expressed pride in his team's performance while acknowledging the need for improvement ahead of the final.

He noted that the semifinal match against the Giants was anticipated to be a tough contest, prompting extensive preparation to retain their title this year.

“We were aware it was going to be a tough game because I understand Tavuli also prepared well for this match,” Puia told SunSPORTS in a post-match interview.

“It was one of the hardest preparations we did for the semifinal because we anticipated a challenging game with our opponent. We worked very hard on our weaknesses from previous games, especially in tackling, defensive organization, and fitness.”

Puia highlighted the team's focus on fitness during their preparation, recognizing it as a significant area for improvement throughout the season.

“Almost everyone witnessed that one of our weaknesses in the competition is fitness,” he said.

He also mentioned that fans had commented on the need for the players to enhance their fitness levels.

To address these concerns, Puia underscored the importance of organizing the backline to counter the Giants' strengths.

“I worked on the back three to organize our defense because I knew our opponents were good at placing accurate kicks on our backline. These were the key elements I focused on during our preparation for the semifinal, and it really paid off, especially in terms of fitness.”

The coach praised his players for executing the game plan effectively, noting significant improvements in their performance.

“Our game plan was to create threats to our opponents since we were aware they excelled in certain key areas. We planned to play tight and close to each other. It was evident in our previous games that we often slipped in the second half, but in the semifinal, the boys managed to maintain momentum until the final whistle. This was a big improvement from our past games, and we also improved in our tackling.”

Despite the victory, Puia acknowledged the need for further refinement to defend their title in the upcoming grand final.

“We have many areas to polish before the grand final match, especially in fitness and finishing. In the second half of the semifinal, we dominated for twenty to thirty minutes inside our opponent's twenty-two area but failed to score any tries, which is a significant concern I will continue to address with the boys before the final.”

Puia expressed gratitude to the fans and supporters for their unwavering encouragement throughout the season, hoping for the same level of support in the grand final.

Meanwhile, the second semifinal of the competition is set to kick off at 4:00 PM today at the Town Ground Rugby Stadium, with the winner joining Avaiki in the final match of the season.

TWELVE LOCAL COACHES COMPLETE FUTSAL C LICENSE

BY ELTON LONARATHA JNR

A total of 12 local futsal coaches have successfully completed the weeklong Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Senior Futsal C License course, delivered by OFC Futsal and Beach Soccer Consultant Coach Jerry Sam at the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Headquarters.

Coach Sam explained to SunSPORTS that the course was specifically designed for active coaches who have already completed their MA Youth and MA Senior Futsal Licenses.

“The OFC Senior Futsal C License course aims to enhance coaches' understanding of training competencies, enabling them to return to their respective clubs and improve their tactical approach to the game, particularly in attacking, defending, and transitioning between the two,” he said.

The primary goal of the course is to equip coaches with the knowledge necessary to elevate their roles domestically, focusing on both understanding and managing the game during training sessions and matches.

Sam noted that while he expected a larger number of local coaches to participate, some were unable to attend due to work commitments.

Among the 12 coaches who completed the course, two were female, highlighting the inclusivity of the program.

Sam confirmed that the coaches will receive their certificates upon completing the assessment phase, which is expected to take three months.

“We have 12 futsal coaches currently undergoing their assessment process, which will be completed in three months before they receive their OFC Senior C certificates of completion,” he said.

“Since this is a C License, participants must go through a three-month assessment process where they will return to their clubs and implement the knowledge gained from the course. I will monitor their progress to ensure they are ready and qualified to receive their certificates.”

The five-day course ran from August 11th to 15th at the SIFF Academy and Technical Headquarters.

RISE RUGBY EMPOWERING FEMALE LEADERS

IN Solomon Islands, rugby has long been seen as a male-dominated sport, but thanks to the RISE Rugby program, supported by Oceania Rugby and the Australian Government through PacificAus Sports, that perception is changing, and women like Ebony Finau, Florence Nodoro, and Freda Matangi are leading the way.

The RISE Rugby program is working to grow women’s rugby by not only supporting players but also empowering women in key leadership roles.

With funding from Australia, three senior positions at the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) are now held by women: the Operations Officer, the Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Officer, and the Finance Officer.

This shift has already sparked change.

Under female leadership, the country has launched a national women’s rugby 7s team, created two new professional competitions, and reintroduced a women’s rugby 10s format to support high-performance development. In September 2025, a women’s 15s tournament will be introduced.

SIRUF Chief Executive Officer Alivereti Mocelutu said the impact of the RISE Rugby program was evident when Solomon Islands’ national women’s rugby 7s team made history by reaching the semifinals of the 2024 Oceania 7s competition for the first time.

Ebony Finau, SIRUF’s Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Officer, had no rugby background when she joined, but she saw the RISE program as a chance to grow and help others grow too.

“Rugby isn’t very popular here, but I wanted to use my skills to promote events, trainings, and the players themselves,” she said.

Ebony completed Level 1 Coaching Training, took part in forums and mentoring, and even became a rugby commentator when Australia sponsored her to attend a rugby Commentary and Mobile Journalism Program in Fiji in June this year.

She’s especially proud of helping high school girls and young women find confidence and visibility in the sport.

“We’re breaking barriers. Women now feel they’re truly part of the rugby community,” she said.

Finance Officer Florence Nodoro also entered the sport through RISE Rugby, bringing her financial skills to manage budgets and support the program’s activities.

Over time, she found herself doing more than just numbers.
“I never expected to be organising tournaments or running rugby awareness sessions in schools, but the passion from the students and their excitement keeps me motivated,” she said.

Florence has seen growing respect for women in rugby, especially at the regional level, and credits support from the Australian Government for helping to make it possible.

For Operations Officer Freda Matangi, rugby has always been part of life.

With brothers who played the sport, her own interest came naturally.

Now, she’s leading efforts to include more women in every part of the game not just as players, but also as coaches, referees, and event organisers.

“Before, rugby was run by men, now, women have a seat at the table,” she said.

Freda said the RISE Rugby program is laying groundwork for future generations.

“We want to inspire others and prove that rugby has a place for women at every level,” she said.

Together, Ebony, Florence, and Freda are helping transform rugby in Solomon Islands both on and off the field.
Through the RISE Rugby program, they are proving that with the right support and opportunity, women can lead, shape, and grow the sport.

The Australian Government has partnered with Oceania Rugby through its PacificAus Sports program since 2022 to deliver RISE Rugby in Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji.
It harnesses the power and popularity of rugby to address systemic barriers faced by women and girls in the Pacific region, advancing gender equality and fostering social and institutional change.
SIRUF President Honourable George Temahua MP said, “the President, Executive Members and the management and staff of SIRUF sincerely thank the Australian Government, through PacificAus Sports and Oceania Rugby, for recognising the importance of this program and choosing Solomon Islands as one of the recipients.”

The RISE Rugby program is not just about lifting players to be their best; it is about building the capacity of women coaches and officials – from the grassroots community level through to elite competition and providing talent pathways for Solomon Islands girls and women to excel in rugby in a range of different capacities.

DURAL VS KURUKURU

THE Dural Warriors Futsal Club from Sydney will tour Honiara from Monday 25th to Friday 29th August, playing two friendly matches against the Solomon Islands Kurukuru at the SIFF Academy.

The matches form an important part of the Kurukuru’s preparation for next month’s OFC Futsal Cup Tournament in Suva, Fiji.

The Warriors, one of Australia’s most respected futsal clubs, have a rich history connected to The Centre Church in Dural, where founding figures such as Brian Codrington played a key role in establishing a pathway for players and futsal development in the Solomon Islands.

The club’s strong community values remain central to its identity, and this tour will also see the team engage in school visits coordinated by the SALT (Sports & Leadership Training) Ministry.

Many of the current Dural Warriors squad are former or current Futsalroos, including Ahmed Sweedan and Jake Basden, bringing international quality and experience to Honiara. The team is led by Warriors captain – and Futsalroos captain – Wade Giovenali, and is currently coached by former Futsalroos pivot Blake Rosier, ensuring high-level technical preparation and leadership.

The connection between the Kurukuru and Dural Warriors is also deeply personal. Elliot Ragomo, former Kurukuru captain and Solomon Islands’ most successful futsal player, previously represented the Warriors. During his time in Sydney, Ragomo shared the court with Giovenali and other Futsalroos at Dural Warriors, creating bonds that continue to inspire young futsal players in the Pacific.

Beyond the matches, the Warriors will host an open training session for local coaches and take part in a joint training with the Kurukuru before departure. The program highlights the shared commitment of both teams to developing futsal in the Pacific and building stronger community ties through the sport.

This visit is made possible through the partnership of the Solomon Islands Football Federation, Dural Warriors, The Centre Church, and SALT Ministry, and will provide a valuable test for the Kurukuru as they build towards the OFC Futsal Cup.

The visit will include two international friendlies:

• Wednesday 27 August, 6:00 PM – Kurukuru vs Dural Warriors, SIFF Academy

• Thursday 28 August, 6:00 PM – Kurukuru vs Dural Warriors, SIFF Academy

Ticket Prices:
• Adults: $10.00
• Kids: $5.00
