Do a digital only release and feel like you’re an unpaid employee of various tech platforms, or release over-expensive petroleum byproducts with a truckload of supply chain headaches? Why not find a label that can have an existential breakdown about BOTH? Good job all these tunes are so damn amazing.

Bogdan Raczynski ‘plays’ Cafe Oto this Saturday 9 August. We’re very happy that DJ support will be provided by the legendary DJ Biros of Junction Supermarket / YOYOBYCBSF album release party fame. Come down and RAVE ‘TILL YOU CRY. Tickets from the Oto website or limited number available on the door.

Very limited hand-stamped white labels of a couple of previous vinyl releases from me at the merch table. New album Slow Down Stupid out now/soon on all the apps!!!!!

A 'video' for a 'single' now on 'streaming'. Is this real life? Have we all turned into memes? Digital avatar caricatures of ourselves, best face forward, a stream of holiday pics whilst a nation is deliberately starved to death. Art always has a place, but wow, sometimes it's hard to focus on the details. This is the 'unofficial' video re-edit of a previous Bogdan Raczynski video. Re-versioned visuals for a re-versioned track. Bogdan preferred something bleaker and more minimal. I kind of liked this creepy slo-mo multiplication of the artist trudging along the sand with his mood board, a fitting analogue. Footage shot by the artist, edit by Jennifer Metcalf. Bogdan 'plays' Cafe Oto in London this coming Saturday, a rare 'live' appearance. I will be behind a table selling records, including some rare test pressings of Samurai Math Beats, and a few other bits and bobs if I can dig them out of the chaos of my work room. If you are there, maybe we can have a 'conversation'. Trying to keep it real and failing, the 2025 vibes are pretty damn bleak. DJ Biros WILL be playing tunes though, and that part will 100% be a joy, get down early and dance, not enough of that at Oto. See you in the pit, etc.

Bogdan Raczynski is awkward, obtuse, the original square peg struggling to get out of his round hole. And that is why we love him so. This release has taken longer than it should have done to emerge into the light for complicated but very good reasons which we’re not going to go into here. For was it not Raczynski himself who proclaimed: “information is an affront to expression, a death knell to spontaneity”? Easy enough for him to say, he should try living in my brain for a day, good grief. If your average AI supercomputer is a churning fountain of zeroes and ones, beautiful binary streams flowing through futuristic neural pathways, then MY head is like an abandoned store room in the basement of a closed down record shop - it’s dark, it’s dusty, it’s crammed floor-to-ceiling with catalogue numbers, names of bass guitarists, etchings from run-out grooves, tangential connections, analogue gunk clogged in mildewed corners, half-remembered raves, snapshot images appearing in non-chronological order, glimpsed briefly through a faulty strobe. The new Bogdan Raczynski album Slow Down Stupid, ‘out’ now. PWYC. Are these slowed down versions of tracks from You’re Only Young Once But You Can Be Stupid Forever? Are these something entirely new? Is one track stretched out to the point of absolute absurdity? Should you listen to these tracks on a loop for infinity? Only YOU, the listener, can decide. You are Slow Down. Displaced commentary for displaced times. Deconstructed. Decnstrcccttttt. Dstrctn. Distractions, one-sided abstra###tions. Everything versioned forever, ever more degraded and disappearing beneath the paste-on layers. FREE PALESTINE, ABOLISH ICE, SAY NO TO THE CAPITALIST DEATH MACHINE (including this).

DISCMIX34 “Tomorrow, Today Will Be Yesterday”

This is the second part of a Volcanic Tongue inspired mix trilogy, and it was recently broadcast on the Observations Of Deviance show on WFMU. Thanks to David Mittelman for broadcasting it. You can find it in the WFMU archives (as well as the Disciples mix vault), alongside David Keenan’s interview with Joe McGasko, and lots of other good stuff.

A companion of sorts to the recently released Volcanic Tongue compilation 2LP, and all of it a celebration of the record shop run for a decade by David Keenan and Heather Leigh. It was very hard to whittle the comp down to 20 tracks, and as David pointed out, this really should have been a comp series like Scum Of The Earth or Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium or Rubbles, but it’s 2025 so it’s all a bit fragmented and all over the place, just like the music itself which traverses a lot of different styles but is tied together by the same kind of single-minded compulsion to make a very specific kind of racket.

Rest in peace to the great reggae singer Owen Gray, who cut some amazing tunes over several decades of Jamaican musical evolution. Also commonly attributed as Owen Grey, we were very happy to include this brilliant Dennis Bovell dub version of his track “Fire Fire (Love Fire)” on the Sufferer Sounds compilation that we put out last year (credited as “Fire Dub” by Matumbi). In classic version fashion you can hear snippets of Owen’s original vocal emerging here and there from the fx-smeared rhythm section. Dennis Bovell picks up the story:

“We recorded this for a man called Chips Richards. Adrian Sherwood will tell you about Chips, he was involved in one of the labels Adrian ran before setting up On-U Sound, Carib Gems. Chips was brought into Trojan Records as one of the A&R guys. He wanted me and Matumbi to do a record alongside Owen Grey, which I thought of as an honour, he was a big star. Owen was doing this song “Fire, Fire”, by Bunny Wailer, and we’re gonna bring the water!

We recorded it secretly as Gooseberry Studios, but then it came out in Canada on Micron, with Matumbi credited. We weren’t happy because we were signed to EMI, and we weren’t allowed to record for anybody else, so EMI are going: “what’s that about?” We had to quickly shut that operation down because they didn’t have permission to put our name on it, it was more like Matumbi played this as a session band. But because it came out and the cat was out of the bag as it were, we had to own up to it. When I wanted to use the dub, Chips said: yeah, you can have it, he kind of owed me one. This is the whole of Matumbi, except the bass player, it’s me playing bass, Webby Jay on the keyboards, Rico Rodriguez on the horns, and I’m toying with my new Eventide Harmonizer. They were all the rage around that time.”
