William Bell (né Yarbrough; born July 16, 1939) is an American soul singer and songwriter.
He began performing in bands as a teenager, releasing his first record with on the local label in 1957.
He developed his songwriting career at the legendary Stax Records label, and would be a guiding force in the evolution of the Stax sound.

In 1961 had released his first solo effort, "You Don't Miss Your Water (Til the Well Runs Dry)", which would be one of the early hits for the label.
He was drafted in 1963 and spent two years in the Army.
In 1967 he released his first solo album at Stax where he released four more albums.
Upon the death of Otis Redding, Bell released the well-received memorial song "A Tribute to a King".

In 1969 Bell moved to Atlanta and started his own label, .
In the mid-70's he left Stax for where he released two albums.

In 1977 he enjoyed the biggest hit of his career with "Trying To Love Two", which sold over two million copies and stayed on the R&B charts for over six months.
After one album at in 1983 he founded his own record company where he released albums up to 00's.

Throughout his career he has recorded successful duets with , , Mavis Staples and .

In 1997, he was inducted into the .
The same year he was awarded with the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's R&B Pioneer Award. In 2004, Bell was inducted into the .

As a songwriter, Bell co-authored the hit "Any Other Way" (which was a cover since Bell issued it first) as a follow-up to "You Don't Miss Your Water"; Billy Idol's 1986 hit "To Be a Lover", which was first a hit for Bell under its original title "I Forgot to Be Your Lover"; and the blues classic "Born Under A Bad Sign", popularized by both and .

In 2017, Bell was awarded a Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album for his record "This Is Where I Live". He performed his hit "Born Under a Bad Sign" alongside Gary Clark Jr at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Bell was also featured on Rolling Stone's "Best of the Grammys" for that year.
