“People at the centre”. At the first EU-UK summit since the UK left the European Union, this week in London, leaders agreed to build closer links in a wide range of areas.

In a significant move compared to the past, one of the sections of the agreement is about “putting people at the centre” of the relationship. This includes:
=> the creation of a 'youth experience' scheme for 18-30 years old
=> the return of the UK into the EU Erasmus+ programme
=> the return of pet passports
=> simplified agrifood trade
=> more talks on business visa.

The detailed terms of these arrangements, however, have to be defined in further talks and no time frame has been specified yet. Find out what we know so far on our website.

Big change as of today for Europeans travelling to the UK. Short-term visitors travelling to the UK for tourism, to visit family and friends, for business or study will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

The travel authorisation will be valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, if sooner. The easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA app. The ETA costs £10 but the fee will increase to £16 on 9 April 2025.

British and Irish citizens, and anyone with a visa or a permission to live, work or study in the UK do not need an ETA.

How will tourism be impacted? It has been anticipated the new travel authorisation could have a “small negative impact” on visits.

The Voila! theatre festival, London's largest transnational theatre event, is on until 24 November. Voila! began as a French and English bilingual fringe festival and in 2017 expanded to include all European languages.

From the visual arts to music and theatre, London and the UK host a wealth of European culture. November saw the opening of major exhibitions on the Italian Renaissance, on Picasso’s life, as well as on Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael.

It has become a tradition for the EU delegation to the UK to organise in November the EU Citizens Gathering, an event that brings together EU and UK representatives, civil society and academics to discuss the EU-UK relationship.

This year, the first EmpowerEU Awards were presented to organisations honouring EU citizens in the UK.

=> The ‘outstanding achievement’ award went to the3million, the largest organisation promoting the rights of EU citizens in the UK.
=> The ‘community champions’ award went to the Polish and Eastern European Christian Family Centre (PEEC), a group that since 2008 has helped people settle in London. Also in this category, the group Settled, which offers practical support in multiple languages to citizens from the EU and Ukraine applying for residence status, received a ‘special mention’.
=> The Young Champions award went to the Young European Movement (YEM), which organises campaigns and events to involve young people in debates on European issues.

Following the N**i invasion of France and the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk in May 1940, Britain feared invasion, and Germans and Italians in the UK were accused in the media of being a ‘5th column’. About 28,000 people, of which 4,000 Italians, were arrested and held in makeshift camps.

Aged 23 and studying architecture, Giorgio Enrico Scola was among those arrested and detained by the British authorities as an ‘enemy alien’. He was one of 1,500 Italians, Austrians and Germans put on a converted cruise ship, the Arandora Star, to be deported to Canada. The ship was torpedoed but Giorgio survived, to be then deported to Australia.

The full story is now told by Giorgio's son, Julian Scola, who published his father's diaries. Find out more on our website.

EU citizens will be required to have a digital travel authorisation and pay £10 to visit the UK from next year, the British government has announced.

The scheme already applies to citizens from the Gulf states and it will soon extend to all eligible non-Europeans. As of next April, it will apply to all nationalities.

❗ Important! It will apply also to people just transiting through the UK, even without going through border control.

There are exemptions, however, and special rules for Ireland. All the details on our website 👉 https://europestreet.news/uk-to-launch-digital-travel-permit-for-eu-citizens-next-year/

Europeans will need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK for a short stay from April 2025.

Between 6 and 9 June EU citizens will go to the polls to elect the European Parliament, the only parliament directly elected by people from multiple countries. More than 370 million people will be eligible to vote, including millions of EU citizens living in the UK. A total of 720 members will be elected for a 5-year mandate.

Who can participate in the elections? In principle, all adult EU citizens from the 27 EU countries can participate. In practice, it depends on where you live and where you are from, as electoral rules are set by each EU member state in national law.

How will the vote impact you? The European Parliament passes laws that apply across all EU member states. Examples include rules on the free movement of people within the EU, on refunds for flight delays and cancellations when travelling within EU countries, on the labelling of food, on air pollution, or on the energy standards for buildings. ✈️🍓🏠
