My interview for the awesome with the remarkable Ilanah Lobel-Torres on What Inspires Her Most as an Opera Singer and how her ART helped give her strength to beat cancer.

Originally from New York, Ilanah Lobel-Torres obtained her bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory and her master's degree in vocal performance from the Mannes School of Music.

'Bench at the end of the World'

I love this old bench at the end of the boardwalk at Dungeness. I often sit here on on my night quests.......I often wonder how many have sat here and paused, just for thought. A funny little bench on the very point of the coast where your smart watches and phones will click over to FRENCH time, propelling you an hour ahead in time, before returning you back to the present when you leave.

Why do I keep photographing old, decaying boats?, I am frequently asked.

Because they represent what used to be the lifeblood of this coastline. An ancient tradition, so seldom practised. Because these old boats hold the memories, dreams and aspirations of those who sailed in them, every day.

This is 'The Fisherlads', a former herring boat on the vast expanses of shingle at Dungeness, onced owned by the Oliler family, one of the oldest and most well-known fishing families in the area who settled here at the beginning of the 20th century.

On my last visit in the summer, someone had clearly ripped apart its port side, and like the other wrecks at Dungeness, it is only a question of time before it is mere driftwood on the beach.

'Fisherlads' shall no longer sail the seas, but it will sail the stars forever.....

The RX15

The natural, shingle, wastelands of Dungeness are littered with the wrecks of many, crumbling old fishing boats. To many, I’m sure they hold no interest and may even be considered, by some, an eyesore.
To me, I have always been fascinated by them; the stories they could tell and the memories that they hold. They are the embodiment of the spirit of the hard-working settlers and families of Dungeness who fished these shores.

The wreck of the RX15 is a FAMOUS Dungeness landmark that has appeared in several television productions, magazines and books, having been a prominent feature of the shingle for over 65 years. Its remaining, clinker-built wooden frame was, sadly, totally destroyed by fire in June, 2021. I was fortunate enough to photograph and film it, just a few weeks before it was burnt.

This awesome castle takes some getting to at the best of times. Daytime is optimal, but the stars don't shine in the day! Thanks to my good buddy Susan Pilcher, I managed to navigate dark paths, untold cow pats, (and cows), d***s and lumpy fields, to capture this beauty. Long exposures always make the scenery appear quite bright, but this was pitch blackness.
