The Great Kasongo has several strategies to evade predators:
1. **Speed and Agility**:
Despite his stocky appearance, he is surprisingly a fast runner. Hr can run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour), which allows him to escape many predators, especially in open terrain.
2. **Burrowing**:
Kasongo often seeks safety by diving into burrows or dens. He is skilled at entering abandoned aardvark or other animals' burrows, which provide a quick escape from predators like lions, hyenas, and leopards.
3. **Keen Senses**:
Kasongo has good eyesight and a keen sense of smell, allowing him to detect predators from a distance. This helps him to stay alert and avoid danger before it's too late.
4. **Defensive Fighting**: If he cannot flee, he may use his sharp tusks to defend himself. These tusks are used in aggressive displays or physical defense when cornered.
These tactics work together to help Kasongo to survive in environments where they are preyed upon by large carnivores.
