Perfect World cuts staff in multi-unit layoffs, reportedly suspends game projects
Perfect World has reportedly made large staff cuts. The tech giant, which exclusively distributes Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 in China and sold its North American branch to Embracer, is said to have laid off over a thousand staff.

Per Chinese outlet The Paper, the reductions have hit nearly all of the company's business units across the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. One mid-range team reportedly dropped from 150 staffers to "dozens" as a result of the cuts.

Thus far, the esports division is said to be the one department that saw no losses. That part of Perfect World's business is said to produce "relatively low" income.

Xbox patent offers first look at scrapped Keystone streaming console

A December 2023 patent newly spotted by Windows Central provides a glimpse of Keystone, which would've been a streaming console for the Xbox ecosystem.

It's been long enough to possibly forget, but Xbox was looking to get into cloud streaming hardware via the Keystone console and streaming stick. CEO Phil Spencer first teased the latter in 2022, only to then reveal it'd been shelved the following month out of pricing concerns.

Had it seen the light of day, it would've accelerated Xbox's cloud streaming plans, which it'd been pushing that year via Game Pass and deals with the likes of Ubisoft, Meta, and more.

Netflix taking mobile-first, 'phased approach' to game releases

While Netflix is still figuring out where it stands in the games space, the streamer thinks it's sorted out most of its growing pains and knows what to do next.

Talking to the Washington Post, external games VP Leanne Loombe spoke about how the company's video game umbrella will keep its eye on mobile titles, at least for now. According to her, Netflix's 270 million subscribers are a fan of quick-hit "snackable" phone games.

As such, it's looking at being a home for smaller studios with mobile expertise, but don't want to be locked to free-to-play games. Getting a mobile foothold is "definitely first" in what Loombe said would be a "phased approach" toward expanding Netflix Games' reach.

Visibility has one of the service's larger problems, and in 2022, it was reported 1 percent of Netflix users downloaded its games. In the two years since, it appears things have slightly improved, or at least enough for Grand Theft Auto Trilogy to net 30 million downloads.
