Although he was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at only age nine, Georges Bizet’s career was a difficult one.
Unable to make money off of his own compositions, he earned his living mainly by arranging and transcribing other people’s music.
His opera ‘Carmen’, caused scandal for its themes of female sexuality, immorality, and violence, and was initially met with poor press and accusations of plagiarism. Bizet died of a heart attack three months after its premiere, unaware that it would become an enduring success.
Listen to our Composer Carousel tonight from 9pm for an hour of Bizet's music on the radio or Global Player.
