The government on Friday increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs5.44 and Rs31.05 per litre, respectively, with immediate effect for the next three days until July 20, to pass on the impact of higher import premiums and global prices following renewed regional tensions.

Following the increase, the price of petrol stands at Rs316.15 per litre and that of HSD at Rs354.35.

The Petroleum Division’s press release notifying the increase said the new prices would be effective from July 18 (Saturday).

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday, calling for restraint and de-escalation as tensions rose in the Middle East with a fresh wave of attacks by the US on Iran and retaliatory strikes at US assets and bases by Tehran.

During the phone call, both leaders exchanged views on the evolving regional situation, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a post on X.

It added that DPM Dar stressed “upon the parties to follow the path of de-escalation and show restraint, as agreed in the Islamabad MoU in June 2026”.

Street Crime on the Rise: Citizen Mugged Outside UBL ATM at Schon Circle, Clifton
Karachi continues to witness a disturbing surge in street crime as another brazen snatching incident took place at Schon Circle in Clifton.
According to eyewitnesses, a motorbike-riding snatcher targeted a citizen outside a UBL ATM in broad daylight. The suspect allegedly robbed the victim of valuables before fleeing the scene within seconds
Witnesses claimed that despite the busy commercial area, there was no security personnel present near the ATM or in the immediate vicinity. They further stated that any security presence was stationed far away, leaving citizens vulnerable to criminals.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the lack of effective security arrangements at public places and ATM locations. Residents and commuters are questioning how criminals continue to operate fearlessly in one of Karachi's busiest and most upscale areas.

Citizens have urged law enforcement agencies to increase security patrols around banks and ATM points, ensuring public safety and preventing such incidents from recurring.

The authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

An attack on the local headquarters of the Sindh Rangers in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar locality on Saturday left three paramilitary personnel martyred and three terrorists dead, the province’s police chief said.

Speaking to Dawn, Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said that it had not initially been confirmed whether a blast had also taken place, adding that the terrorists had rammed the main gate with their vehicle.

Odho further said that a “mopping-up operation” was underway and that the area had been cordoned off by Special Security Unit (SSU) commandos, Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) and rangers personnel.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed to Dawn that one injured paramilitary trooper was brought to the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds to his leg.

Meanwhile, a Reuters reporter at the scene said firing had ended and the situation was calm.

Earlier, law enforcers rushed to the incident site after heavy firing and an explosion were reported in the area, reported Dawn News.

Special units, including the Rapid Response Force and police commandos, were dispatched to the scene to take control of the situation, the broadcaster added.

The general area was also cordoned off by police and paramilitary personnel.

Rescue 1122 Sindh said it had received reports of an explosion near Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 5 and immediately dispatched teams to the scene from its central command and control centre.

According to the rescue service’s spokesperson, Chief Operating Officer Dr Abid Jalaluddin Sheikh was also dispatched to the incident site on the directives of Chief Minister’s Adviser on Rehabilitation Gyan Chand Essrani and Rescue 1122 (Sindh) Director General Brig (retd) Wajid Sibghatullah.

The world’s second-largest consumer of crude oil, China, has pulled out all the stops to preserve supplies as the war in Iran has cut off access to more than 11 million barrels of oil per day. By cutting down on imports, relying on vast stockpiles and utilizing more clean energy, China has been able to cushion the impact of higher prices at home, if not alleviate it completely.

Those actions have been felt in the global market as well.

After more than three months of war, some analysts predicted oil prices could surge as high as $200 a barrel this year. However, even as total estimated supply losses have surpassed 1 billion barrels of oil, crude prices have remained relatively muted. Many analysts point to China as a primary reason.

“China has played a critical role here to buffer this for the rest of Asia… thereby buffering the global economy,” said Daan Walter, principal at Ember, an energy think tank.

A High Level Committee to oversee mediation and a “line of communication” for the Strait of Hormuz are being set up, mediators said. Technical talks will continue this week in Switzerland.

• Tense moments: President Donald Trump earlier angered Iran’s top negotiator by threatening the Tehran delegation, which stalled talks. Trump told Fox News the US could resume bombing Iran and “take over” the Strait of Hormuz if a deal is not reached.

President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday directed that all possible efforts be made to minimise loadshedding across the country, according to a statement issued by the President’s Secretariat.

He issued the directive while chairing a meeting on water resource management at Aiwan-i-Sadr, the statement said, adding that the president also addressed the issue of energy shortfalls linked to the regional situation.

President Zardari “stressed that any load management should be carried out strictly in a transparent and declared manner, in line with prior public announcements, so that citizens are fully informed and disruption is reduced”, the statement added.

The president’s directive came a day after the government announced more than two hours of daily loadshedding during peak hours in a bid to prevent a sharp increase in electricity tariffs.
