The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has released Rs800 million in relief funds for districts affected by ongoing flash floods, with an additional Rs500 million allocated specifically for the hardest-hit Buner district. The devastating floods have caused the deaths of at least 325 people and injured 156, contributing to a national death toll of 657 since late June.
The KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is coordinating relief efforts, with damaged houses, schools, and infrastructure reported across multiple districts. Buner leads in casualties with 217 deaths and extensive damage, followed by Shangla, Mansehra, Bajaur, Swat, Lower Dir, Battagram, and Nowshera. The provincial and federal governments are actively working together to provide aid, restore infrastructure, and assist displaced families.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged full federal support, including donating a month’s salary from the federal cabinet towards relief. He has instructed ministers to personally oversee restoration of electricity, water, roads, and medical aid, emphasizing unity and service over politics during this crisis. Over 450 relief camps have been set up, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) predicts the monsoon season will continue through August with additional rain spells likely, advising continued readiness and resource deployment. The Pakistan Army and various agencies remain engaged in emergency operations, helping those affected and working to restore normalcy.
Sindh government has also offered aid despite reports it was declined, with officials emphasizing the moral and practical necessity of national solidarity in combating the disaster’s impact. International organizations have been involved, yet the ongoing risk highlights long-term challenges posed by climate and weather extremes in the region.
