Winner Announcement – Best RC exposition!

The Executive Board of Society for Artistic Research (SAR) has announced the winner of the Annual Prize for Excellent Research Catalogue Exposition 2024. Winner is “Fragmente 2” by Kerstin Frödin and Åsa Unander-Scharin.

Leanna Moran, author in VIS #12 ’Contemporary Ar(t)chaeology’, was selected as 2nd finalist with her exposition “Why I Paint Thousands of Circles”. Congratulations! 🥳⭐️

The jury’s motivation:
“The exposition ’Why I Paint Thousands of Circles’ shows the fragmented collage of materials as an “ar(t)chaeological archive” and invites an intuitive mode of navigation between both personal and public archival materials. With an auto-ethnographic orientation, this exposition combines highly intimate autobiographical vignettes and newspaper fragments to expose the interweaving and co-relation of the highly-charged personal and socio-political histories within mid 90's working class North West London. Presented from the position of an emerging researcher, this exposition engages with the Research Catalogue in a very individual, exploratory way, not seeking to present a finished work. The consistency of the presentation, which is presented in a very dense vertical exposition, is its strength – the exposition appears to not be about answering questions, but about consistently asking questions.”

VIS önskar Mia Engberg och Efva Lilja välkomna till redaktionskommittén!

Mia Engberg är filmskapare, författare och forskare som doktorerat vid Stockholms Konstnärliga högskola, SKH. Hennes forskning undersöker mörkret som material i filmiskt berättande och hennes forskningsprojekt resulterade i den flerfaldigt belönade Belleville-trilogin som visats i Sverige och internationellt. Hon har skrivit tre essäböcker om film och är för tillfället ledamot i Vetenskapsrådets kommitté för konstnärlig forskning.

Efva Lilja är konstnär och arbetar med koreografi som dans, bild och text. Hennes verk har presenterats i mer än fyrtio länder, ofta omtalade som kontroversiella och banbrytande. Bland dem verk för Moderna Museet Stockholm, Baltic Art Center Visby, Centre Georges Pompidou Paris och Guggenheim Bilbao men också verk för experimentella forum, olika scenrum och offentliga miljöer. Hon presenterar utställningar, föreläser och har gett ut 14 böcker översatta till flera språk. Ett stort engagemang för konstnärers möjlighet att forska har givit henne uppdrag för den konstnärliga forskningens utveckling i många länder.

VIS is happy to announce two new members of our Editorial Committee: Mia Engberg and Efva Lilja!

Mia Engberg is a filmmaker, author, and researcher who holds a doctorate from the Stockholm University of the Arts, SKH. Her research explores darkness as a material in cinematic storytelling, and her research project resulted in the award-winning Belleville Trilogy, which has been showcased in Sweden and internationally. She has authored three essay books on film and is currently a member of the Swedish Research Council's Committee for Artistic Research.

Efva Lilja is an artist working with choreography as dance, imagery, film, and writing. Her works have been presented in more than forty countries, often seen as controversial and trailblazing. Among them commissioned works for the Museum of Modern Art Stockholm, Baltic Art Center Visby, Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, and the Guggenheim Bilbao, works for experimental fora, various stages, and public spaces. She present exhibitions, lectures, and has published 14 books. Her great commitment to artists opportunities to conduct research, has given her assignment for the development of artistic research in many countries.

Cecilia Roos and Magnus Bärtås left the VIS Editorial Committee in December 2024. Both have been part of the committee since VIS started in 2017 and published a total of 14 issues. Magnus served as an editor for VIS #2 'Estrangement' (2019), VIS #3 'History Now' (2020) and co-edited (together with Behzad Khosravi Noori) VIS #12 'Contemporary Ar(t)chaeology: A dead-alive of Artistic Re-search and History' (2024). Cecilia co-edited (with Gunhild Mathea Husvik-Olaussen) VIS #10 'Circulating Practices' (2023) and VIS #11 'Play, come what may' (2024). Thank you for your much appreciated work – we miss you!

New editorial committee members will be presented soon.

Release event for VIS #13 during the Artistic Research Spring Forum 2025 in Kristiania 18 March. Tale Næss, member in VIS Editorial Committee, presented the latest issue “Brieftopia”. Authors Hilde H Honerud and Jon H Honerud did a presentation about their exposition “Photography, Temporality, and Thinking about the Future”, and author Rut Karin Zettergren presented ”Galaxy Revolution – Space travel as a tool for reimagining” by Whyte&Zettergren. VIS Open Call #15 – deadline 29/5 2025

Utlysningen till att medverka i VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research nummer 15 är öppen! Temat är ”MED SPRÅKET/MOT SPRÅKET/I SPRÅKET”. Redaktör för numret är Tale Næss, medredaktör är Michael Francis Duch.

I detta nummer av VIS söker vi expositioner som undersöker eller utmanar den roll som språket spelar i konstnärlig forskning. Vi är intresserade av bidrag som arbetar med språk eller mot språk, som utmanar språkliga konventioner, använder flerspråkiga strategier eller utmanar och utforskar språkets roll som en länk mellan konstnärlig praktik och dess spridning.

In this issue, we are looking for contributions that explore the role of language in artistic research. This could be artistic research that experiments with language as a tool for reflection, that goes against it and/or moves around it. That operates with polylingual approaches or questions the position language has had, especially within artistic research.
