New release: BONE LAKE (Roque Baños & Ben Cherney)
Original score from the 2024 horror thriller feature film directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan, starring Maddie Hasson, Alex Roe and Andra Nechita, produced by LD Entertainment and released by Bleecker Street Media and Netflix (USA), Signature Entertainment (UK), Originals Factory (France) and Busch Media Group (Germany).
THE STORY: A couple’s vacation at a secluded estate is upended when they’re forced to share the mansion with a mysterious couple. A dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of s*x, lies, and manipulation, triggering a battle for survival.
THE SCORE: “The Bone Lake score is distilled from the idea that every truth might obscure a lie, and every lie might carry its own kind of truth. Every decision, every emotion rests uneasily on a sense that some hidden shadow looms beneath the surface. Much of the sonic world springs conceptually from the titular lake itself: submerged percussion; plinks from a string trio; low booms echoing across open water. But at the heart is the classical saxophone — swelling, luring, pealing, shrieking, oscillating. This fluid metallic core is interwoven with rippling waves of electronics and decorated by bright flashes of piano, bells, and strains of lush strings. The result is deeply tender, jarring in its bluntness, and unsettlingly patient. Familiar classical melodies bloom and smear into new shapes as the story deepens. Amid tension, the score embraces moments of theatrical absurdity, delighting in its own audacity. THE COMPOSERS: Roque Baños is an acclaimed Spanish composer and conductor best known for his work in film music. He began his musical education in Spain, studying saxophone, piano, harmony, composition, and conducting before earning a scholarship in 1993 to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he specialized in film scoring and jazz and graduated summa cm laude. After returning to Spain, Baños transitioned from performance to composing, quickly establishing himself in the film industry with scores for Spanish and international films. His collaborations include work with directors such as Álex de la Iglesia and Fede Álvarez. He has scored English-language features like Sexy Beast, The Machinist, and Evil Dead, and his music often reflects strong jazz influences. Baños has received multiple Goya Awards for Best Original Score and was featured in ASCAP’s 2020 Sundance Composer Spotlight for his work. Ben Cherney is a Los Angeles–based multimedia composer, arranger, orchestrator, and producer active in contemporary film and media music. He collaborates with a range of composers and writing teams in both scoring and production roles, bringing expertise in programming, arrangement, and broader creative music production to his projects. Cherney has worked alongside acclaimed composer Roque Baños since 2018, contributing as a programmer and arranger on major film scores such as The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Come Play, and Father There Is Only One as part of Baños’s team. His film credits also include work on The Kids Are Alright 2 (A todo tren 2: Sí, les ha pasado otra vez), where he collaborated with Baños on the score, and the upcoming horror thriller Bone Lake, which he co-scored with Baños.
