I often hear this line in Bisaya: “Bahalag saging basta labing,” which is translated into English as, “Even if we only have bananas, as long as we love each other, it is okay.”

As I was reading a line from John MacArthur, he said, “Contentment is a by-product of distress.” It made me think of this Bisaya idiom, and it struck me deeply.

We often say, “Ay, sanay na ako sa hirap.” Because of this, we learn to be content even when we have little. Hard times teach us what really matters, and that leads to contentment.

Our needs as human beings are actually simple: food, clothing, shelter, and godliness with contentment. The Bible teaches us to be content with the basic necessities of life.
