While Iran and the U.S. Escalate, China Watches and Gains

The renewed confrontation between Iran and the United States has put the Middle East at the centre of global attention once more. Military strikes, threats to the Strait of Hormuz, rising energy risks, and fears of a wider regional war. But there is another actor who may benefit from the escalation- China.

This opinion piece analyses how Beijing may benefit from the Iran-U.S. conflict without direct military engagement, China’s growing economic ties with the Gulf states, and how distraction of the US in the Middle East could create more strategic space for China in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a time of insecurity and uncertainty, a time of fear and anger and strongman politicians that seek to beat us down and keep us complacent, it is vital to find a way to keep fighting. Writers, activists, political theorists and sometimes even politicians themselves can provide the hope that we need to keep our heads up. To build a better future, we need to start by imagining one—by believing that it can exist.

A half‑century after the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic declared independence, Western Sahara continues to remain one of the world’s last unresolved decolonisation cases, trapped between the indifference of the international community and Moroccan ambition in the region. As the dispute has hardened into a prolonged stalemate in which Morocco advances its claims with backing from the Spanish government and other European countries, the future of the Sahrawi people remains uncertain.

From above, there is a place where the rooftops, packed tightly together, resemble chocolate softened and gently melting under the relentless sun. Out in the open air, boys sell mandazi, dropping lumps of dough into cauldrons of furiously bubbling oil, while women press chapati flat against heavy griddles. Men carry sugarcane and potatoes on wooden handcarts, nearby, salons braid customers’ hair, and rows of boda boda wait for passengers along the roadside.

This is Kibera, an informal settlement in southwestern Nairobi, often described as Africa’s largest slum.

“Slavic core” is everywhere — but what does it really mean?

What started as a niche aesthetic on TikTok has turned into a global trend built on femininity, controversy and the performance of “generational trauma.” Fur hats, the “Slavic stare,” post-Soviet melancholy — all wrapped into a visual language that feels both nostalgic and political.

In early March, a handful of UPF members went on a highly anticipated week-long trip to Estonia, organised by the travel committee. The visit was spent exploring the charm of Tallinn and Tartu, while simultaneously participating in lectures, workshops, and embassy visits, serving as one of the final projects of a year-long Nordic-Baltic knowledge exchange.
