This track by already had a lot going on in the highs. Instead of bringing the scissors in for the top, I gave it some tube EQ push around 820Hz and 2200Hz. Then I could gently roll off just a tad of the excessive top end.

The result is a track that feels more forward and energetic, without burying its original brightness.

Mastering breakbeats usually calls for a different mindset than mastering house or techno, where the energy comes from the relationship between the kick, hats and the groove. Here, the bassline often carries more of the weight while the drums are free to move around it.

The goal wasn’t to make it louder or more aggressive. It was to keep the movement, let the bass do its job, and make sure everything translates to a club system without losing the track’s character.

I want to help the track to tell its story, not rewrite it.

The local mom/dad rock band (or in Swedish = ”dansband”) unfortunately ceased operations in Svedala outside of Malmö.

Luckily enough we managed to save their Lexicon PCM60, so that the spirit of Candix can live for many more years - for example on your closed 909 hats and its breathtaking depth and width.

Now I’m wondering: where has this unit been my whole life? I cannot mix without it.

Sometimes a track already has everything it needs. It just needs fresh ears to bring it all the way through.

sent over this beautiful record with a strong identity and all the right foundations. My job was simply to help it hold attention for 7 minutes, translate on the floor, and still feel good for home listening.

Separate your personal taste from the artistic vision. That was one of the first lessons I learned as a mastering engineer.

My job isn’t to decide what the music should be. It’s to help it become the best version of itself.

But every now and then, a record comes along that makes me enjoy this profession a little bit extra.

I first heard this track while mastering a live set from and from . And now, while mastering their upcoming EP containing this tune, I find myself just as hypnotized 🌀
