Activated charcoal powder is a fine black powder made from carbon-rich materials, such as wood, coconut shells, peat, or bamboo, that have been burned at high temperatures. The process of "activation" involves heating the material in the presence of a gas or chemical to create a porous structure. This structure significantly increases the surface area of the charcoal, enhancing its ability to adsorb (trap) substances.
Key Features:
1. Highly Porous: The increased surface area allows activated charcoal to bind to toxins, chemicals, and impurities.
2. Adsorption: Unlike absorption, adsorption means particles adhere to the surface of the charcoal rather than being soaked into it.
Uses:
1. Medical:
Treating poisonings or drug overdoses by binding harmful substances in the stomach and intestines.
Used in some over-the-counter products to relieve gas and bloating.
2. Cosmetic:
Found in face masks, toothpaste, and soaps for its ability to draw out impurities from skin or whiten teeth.
3. Industrial:
Used in water filtration systems, air purifiers, and other applications requiring removal of contaminants.
4. Health and Wellness:
Sometimes used in supplements or detox regimens, though scientific evidence on its effectiveness in these roles is limited.
It is generally safe when used appropriately, but it may interfere with the absorption of medications or nutrients if taken internally without proper guidance.
