I built a tool last night that removes burned-in captions from a video using a local Llama model. Took one evening. 90-95% accurate, leaves the odd box behind.

That's what bothered me about it.

Starting a project used to be expensive enough that you'd think first. AI made
starting free. It did not make finishing free.

So I've got a pile of tools sitting at 80%...which is exactly the point where
something is useless to everyone except me.

It's impulsive shopping, basically. Remove the friction and you buy things you
don't finish.

What I'm doing about it: a git hook that blocks me from creating a new repo and
makes me answer a few questions first. And a rule that if I ever have to bypass
it in a real emergency, it gets uninstalled the next day...a guard you quietly
route around is worse than not having one.

Should you learn SIMD as a developer?

Well, depends on what kind of projects you’re working with and if you actually need the optimization or not.

It was a cool concept to learn and it has its benefit, but it’s not something that is globally applicable to every single project.

And I found it an interesting concept, but it was not providing much performance to my project, which I built.

And in one case, it actually proved to be worse than the actual implementation. Because it was holding 15 slots if one of them was dragging it.
