As you catch up on emails and scour the internet for good deals, here’s a break (30% off!) on two really great box sets that you might actually want (or want to give to someone you love — or even just… like):
1. A 2LP set of Pharoah Sanders’ record PHAROAH from 1977. The box includes: The first ever remastered version of PHAROAH, done in collaboration with the man himself, two insane live performances of “Harvest Time” from a European tour in 1977, and a booklet with three essays that re-contextualize the album in the arc of his entire oeuvre. The box is also chock full of wild, never-before-published archival ephemera that’s fun for both fans and those new to great.
2. A 5LP set from a little known but dearly beloved highlife artist in Nigeria named Alhaji Waziri Oshomah, who makes synth heavy spiritual dance music with his family. Waziri wrote and recorded these five albums — Vol. 1-5 (1978-1984) — during a period in his life when he was turning more seriously to his Muslim faith. Since then, Waziri has become a spiritual pillar in his community in Southern Nigeria — which is majority Christian — and his pan-religious music blends indigenous folk traditions, Christian iconography, and Islamic ethics all into one euphoric dance music, meant to help you get down and stay on the right path.
This box set marks the first major release of Waziri’s work, looking closely at his legacy of interfaith acceptance in a country that has been rent apart by religious factions. It comes with an amazing booklet about Waziri’s celebrated life that was written by his children — and tells his story from the days of growing up in Afenmailand and sneaking into highlife bars to getting signed to Decca and eventually becoming a farmer and taking the hajj for the first time.
Sale ends Sunday night.
Until then, wherever you are in the world, hope your teams wins.
