We spend so much time trying to make someone see the world from our map.

Connection begins when we stop asking them to stand where we stand and start wondering what the landscape looks like from where they are.

Understanding doesn’t mean agreement. It means becoming curious enough to see that another person can stand in the same landscape and experience it completely differently.

The moment you stop trying to win is often the moment you finally start to understand.

Conflict changes when the goal shifts from proving our version to understanding what happened inside the other person.

Understanding isn’t agreement. It’s staying curious long enough to see the map they’re standing on.

The fastest way to lose someone? Argue with their experience.

That doesn’t mean every interpretation is accurate, or that every conclusion about the other person is true. It means the feeling itself still happened.

There’s a difference between saying “I feel rejected” and “you are rejecting me.” One describes an experience. The other turns that experience into a verdict.

Understanding doesn’t require agreement. It starts with being curious about what happened inside the other person.

Two people. Same moment. Completely different realities.

One person needs space. The other feels distance. One thinks they’re calming things down. The other feels shut out.

So much of conflict begins when our inner experience quietly becomes a fact about the other person.

Maybe intimacy isn’t seeing everything the same way. Maybe it’s learning how to stay connected when we don’t.

Two People, Two Maps is out now.

This chapter is about what happens when our maps don’t match, how quickly an inner experience can become a verdict about the other person, why understanding someone isn’t the same as agreeing with them and the small, enormous difference between “I feel abandoned” and “you are abandoning me.”

Intimacy isn’t about finding someone whose map matches ours. It’s learning how to stay in contact when it doesn’t.

Understanding is not agreement.

I can understand why something frightened you without agreeing that I was dangerous. I can understand why you needed distance without wanting the same distance. I can understand why something felt rejecting without agreeing that rejection was my intention.

Understanding doesn’t require me to abandon my map. It asks me to become curious about yours.

Two People, Two Maps is out tomorrow.

What changes when we stop treating understanding as agreement?

Stay curious. Stay honest. Stay present. Stay human.

Tomorrow: Two People, Two Maps, the next chapter of Collecting Maps.

Two people can live through the same moment and walk away in two completely different worlds.

One needs space. The other experiences distance. One thinks they are calming things down. The other feels shut out.

This chapter asks what happens when our maps don’t match, and whether intimacy is less about seeing everything the same way, and more about learning how to stay in contact when we don’t.

How do two people keep meeting when their maps point in different directions?

Out tomorrow, on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Stay curious. Stay honest. Stay present. Stay human.

Curiosity without consent isn’t intimacy.

Being able to tell someone something deeply personal, without expecting them to agree, reciprocate or act on it, can be incredibly intimate. The safety is in knowing that honesty is welcome and that no one owes the other person a yes.

The Erotic Mind is out now, on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Where does that kind of safety live in your relationships?

Stay curious. Stay honest. Stay present. Stay human.
