Richmond Bell Architects Ltd rewrite the script for the off-grid dwelling in the making of this Dorset home for the studio’s founder James Bell.

Where one might expect a rustic timber cabin, here the team present a luxury, spacious home that defies every expectation of the off-grid dwelling.

Running entirely on solar energy, the house is built under Class Q permitted development rights – which allows redundant agricultural buildings to be converted into residential homes without the need for a full planning application.

Out of respect for its context, the design draws on the traditional barn vernacular, using a series of gabled blocks to cleverly compose a country home.

Varying in both scale and sensibility, each volume employs contrasting materials and glazing systems, creating an intriguing tension between contemporary architecture and cottage-core aesthetics.

The ground-floor flat of a Victorian villa in Edinburgh has been carefully extended at the hands of Archer + Braun.

Drawing inspiration from mid-century Californian modernism, the extension embraces crisp geometry and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Careful planting tops the build, improving biodiversity while remaining sensitive to neighbouring sight lines.

In contrast to the new contemporary addition, the remainder of the floor-plan makes the most of its period character with detailed mouldings and joinery returned back to their former glory.

Take a look inside The Root Cabin ☀️

On the cover of enki’s latest issue is a pre-fabricated cabin built amongst the olive groves of Zakynthos, Greece from Kasawoo Ltd. Better recognised for its intriguing auburn exterior, here we offer you a look behind the cladding.

Crafted within the bijoux proportions of the 2.5m x 8m build, the interiors are an exercise in micro living. Maximising the limited floor space, sustainably sourced plywood lines the walls, floors and ceilings, while also sculpting essential furniture.
