Special theme-section in Baltic Worlds. Sounds in Times of War. Popular Music, (Contentious) Politics and Social Change Since Russia's War on Ukraine
Popular music has time and again played a supporting role in (post-) Soviet popular movements. Exploring the period before the full-scale invasion, following the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, until today and the full-scale invasion, this special theme-section seeks to examine music’s multifaceted roles in reflecting, shaping, and responding to the political landscape, propaganda, and societal sentiments during times of war. In addition to Ukraine this call also is open to examining pivotal events in Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, and Russia, discussing topics closely related to the war and its repercussions.
Guest Editors: Anna Schwenck (Siegen University), Aleksej Tikhonov (UZH Zurich), David-Emil Wickström (Popakademie Baden-Württemberg)
