by Elizabeth Gray In Sweden, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan began at sunset on Friday May 26th and will end approximately on June 24th. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon cycle. Ramadan is based on the lunar calendar, and according to many Islamic traditions, it begins when the new moon is visible. It is possible to calculate the birth of a new moon; however, certain factors such cloudiness and atmospheric conditions can interfere with visibility. [ 695 more words ]

Photos by Shubhesh Aggarwal Uppsala was host to a cultural carnival locally known as the Kulturernas Karnival during the weekend of May 21-22. Concentrated in Engelska parken, the festival featured dance performances, workshops, food, activities for children and tons of music. Through the focus on arts, the festival provided opportunities for artists of every kind to showcase their work and craft. [ 127 more words ]

Kristína Korčeková, part of the Väktargatan Food Hub, checks her list to make sure all of the members get the right groceries. On Thursday May 18th, Väktargatan Food Hub arranged to have its monthly food delivery at Kollaboratoriet as part of the Uppsala Sustainability Festival. Food Hub members picked up items such as produce, milk and kombucha. The Väktargatan Food Hub allows members to order food online from local producers and has it delivered a few days after the order deadline closes.

Happy birthday to a botanist considered a local hero in Uppsala, Sweden where he received most of his education. For those of you in Uppsala, we encourage to take a walk through the botanical gardens (pictured above) or stroll down one of the Linnaeus trails. This past week, Kollaboratoriet, a venue in Uppsala for events based on sustainability themes, was taken over by “Follow Me Through Fashion Land”, a multimedia exhibit on the pitfalls of fast fashion. Combining arts and communication with traditional sustainability concerns of environment and economy, the exhibit guided more than 80 guests through the unintended consequences of careless consumerism. Throughout the May 17 exhibit, creators Julia Fahlman, Hanna Andtbacka, Hyejin Choi and Aimée Kampschöer were on hand to field questions about the exhibit and to direct guests. [ 68 more words ]

On Friday May 12th at 9:36 PM, part of the Uppsala University delegation boarded the train at Uppsala Central Station to begin their 18 hour journey to the climate talks in Bonn, Germany. When asked how they were feeling, one delegate replied: ‘Surreal. This is where the big decisions happen, and we get to go in’. Climate groups in Uppsala and interested citizens are eagerly awaiting their reports from Bonn and will be welcoming them back to Uppsala at the end of the week.
