The Theranos Founder, Elizabeth Holmes has been convicted of fraud.

Prosecutors have said Holmes knowingly lied about technology she said could detect diseases with just a few drops of blood.

The prosecution sought to prove Holmes knew the product she was selling to investors - a machine called the Edison - was a scam, but remained determined for the company’s success.

Theranos was at one point valued at $9 billion, and Holmes was able to raise more than $900 million from various billionaires.

It's Friday - which means Good News Friday!

Thanks to a new and cheaper treatment option, 18 out of 30 patients with incurable blood cancer are now in complete remission.

“By using a patient’s own white blood cells, doctors reprogrammed them to better identify and attack the cancerous cells which cause multiple myeloma.” (Good News Network)

The treatment saved the lives of 18 patients, all of whom had previous treatments such as bone marrow transplants and chemotherapy - which had failed.

“Even though it is an incurable disease, achieving complete remission has a significant impact on patient prognosis. It is directly linked to greater survival”, Fernández de Larrea told El Pais

Scientists have found water marks up to as much as 40% of Mars’ grand canyon.

As it covers 15,800 square miles (41,000 square kilometers), the water area is larger than the Netherlands.

Alexey Malakhov, a scientist at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow said “We found a central part of Valles Marineris to be packed full of water - far more water than we expected” as well as “This is very much like Earth’s permafrost regions, where ice permanently persists under dry soil because of the constant low temperatures.”

Researchers used the Trace Gas Orbiter to record neutrons exiting the soil of Mars, which took about 3 years of recordings before finding and producing the discovery.

“Such ice not only is an intriguing material for searching frozen proto-life fragments or complex organic molecules from the early epoch of Mars, but also is an indispensable natural resource for future Mars exploration that is easy to exploit,” Malakov and his co-authors said in their corresponding paper which was published in Icarus.

It’s Friday and Christmas Eve - which means Good News!

Two weeks ago - after the Kentucky Tornado that moved across many towns - such as the deeply affected Mayfield, Benton, Dawsons Springs and Bremen, Jim Finch drove his truck packed with food, and set up a grill to feed people who had been affected.

Jim said “I just figured I’d do what I can do”, which clearly shows you what an incredibly selfless person he is. We could use more people like him in the world!

Scientists have created environmentally sustainable batteries that are paper-thin, biodegradable, and can be buried in soil after use.

The zinc batteries are developed by NTU Singapore, and are made up of electrodes that are screen-printed on both sides of a piece of reinforced hydrogel cellulose paper.

Once the batteries have been used up, they can be buried in soil and break down within a month.

In one experiment, the scientists cut away parts of the battery, which didn’t affect the functionality of the battery. They believe it can be integrated into flexible electronics - such as foldable phones, or biomedical sensors for health monitoring.

22/12/2021

While many countries have imposed further restrictions or lockdowns, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced there will be no further restrictions or lockdowns in England before Christmas. It is unclear whether or not there will be restrictions after Christmas.

The government has not ruled out any additional restrictions, and has pledged to do whatever it takes to protect the nation.

While people are relieved that Christmas is going ahead as normal, many also want some certainty about what’s going to happen after Christmas.

What’s your opinion? Are you for or against further restrictions?

It’s Friday which means Good News Friday!

New treatment could potentially be a groundbreaking option for ALS and other autoimmune diseases.

The trial could offer hope to many living with ALS. Coya Therapies in Houston are currently designing a novel treatment for ALS, which involves seeing if T-regulatory cells could be re-trained to halt the attack on one’s own cells that characterize autoimmune diseases like ALS and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzeimer’s.

So far, the phase 1 trial has shown no adverse side-effects in the three patients who are taking part.

“Tregs (T-regulatory) are a vital part of the combined-arms attack of our immune system, workig as something like a coordinator. Coya Therapies have found that Tregs are suppressed in Alzeimer’s Disease, but that when introduced, like in the ALS trial, from outside the body, their immuni-modulatory properties are restored”.

Isn’t this great news!
