After spending countless hours with the same machine, you naturally discover its most effective applications. The Digitone is a powerful instrument, but its biggest drawback, in my opinion, has been the limited number of tracks. While eight voices offer considerable creative potential, compressing everything into just four tracks is a time-consuming and restrictive process. Nevertheless, I recently challenged myself to create eight new tracks using only the Digitone.

This exercise proved incredibly valuable, revealing new techniques and, once again, forcing me to pare down my sounds and embrace a more minimalist approach. I always strive for simplicity, using as few elements as possible, but I find that achieving true minimalism is the most challenging artistic pursuit.

This is the fifth instalment in my second Digitone-only dub techno project. It’s a minimalistic experiment to create complete songs using only four tracks and eight voices.

Some months ago, I did a remix session of Nae:tek & Roman Ridders' track, "Dark Light." As my workflow isn’t DAW-based, the Digitakt is my main tool when it comes to remixing. My approach is to start by chopping up the stems into smaller samples. I cut out the small pieces that I like best and create a remix sample library. Then, I slowly build it up. I usually add a new kick but keep the hats and snares to make it sound fairly similar to the original. So, some sounds are changed massively, and some are kept fairly untouched. I also like to add some of my own sounds in the end to give it a personal touch. This session has really inspired me to create more work that resembles this further on, so it was a huge inspirational session for me.

The limitation of only 8 voices and 4 tracks in this minimalist Digitone-only dub techno project has meant I've been missing the ability to add more pads and ambience. I really enjoy working with soundscapes to create textures and drones that enhance the overall aesthetic, so I’m looking forward for my next project now. However, it's been a great project for digging even deeper into the Digitone and to put more work into every single sound. Now, I will start to compile the recordings from this project into a finished release.

The original Digitone, released in 2017, is truly a marvelous FM synthesizer. To be honest, my experience with FM synthesis is limited to Elektron', but they've undeniably sparked a genuine love for it within me. Initially, I was somewhat skeptical about whether it would deliver the specific sounds I sought. However, the more time I dedicated to it, the clearer it became that it was, in fact, perfect for my needs. Perhaps it was a process of me adapting to its unique character, or perhaps it was the Digitone adapting to mine; either way, it’s a fantastic machine.

This is the sixth instalment in my second Digitone-only dub techno project. It’s a minimalistic FM experiment to create complete songs using only four tracks and eight voices.
