International Whale Shark Day!

Today we celebrate the world's largest fish, the Whale Shark. These gentle giants are endangered, mainly due to human activities like bycatch and pollution. Established in 2008, this day raises awareness for the need to protect these incredible creatures.

We all need to do our part to help conserve them!

Check out this issue of Asian Geographic Magazines that take us into the fascinating world of gobies!

11 facts about gobies that will captivate you during your next underwater adventure:

1️⃣Freshwater and Land Gobies: Gobies thrive not only in marine environments but also in freshwater mountain creeks in Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Polynesia.

2️⃣Goby Biodiversity: With 1,850 species known to science, gobies are abundant, especially in coral reefs. The Philippines alone hosts 395 species.

3️⃣Small and Short-lived: Gobies, among the smallest vertebrates, have rapid generation times and short life spans.

4️⃣Gobies as Squatters: These fish live on corals and other marine organisms, often blending in perfectly with their hosts.

5️⃣Goby Camouflage: Their color and texture often match their invertebrate hosts, making them nearly invisible.

6️⃣Shrimp Gobies: Over a hundred species of gobies share burrows with shrimp, each performing specific roles.

7️⃣Freshwater Gobies: Adapted to fast-flowing streams, these gobies are more elongated and torpedo-shaped.

8️⃣Amphibious Gobies: Mudskippers prefer land, feeding in mangrove forests and breathing through enlarged gill chambers and their skin.

9️⃣Mudskipper Mobility: When frightened, mudskippers quickly skip into the water, but they prefer to remain on land.

🔟Caribbean Gobies: The Caribbean’s isolation from the Pacific has led to unique evolutionary paths for gobies.

1️⃣1️⃣Photographing Gobies: Smaller and more elusive than other marine animals, gobies present a unique challenge for underwater photographers.

Scuba diving is transformative and meditative, but our oceans are changing fast.

A must buy book ➡️25 Future Dives aims to prepare divers for stressed ocean sites, using dive briefings and reviews to explain the causes and consequences of ocean issues.

Here are 11 quick facts covered in the book:

❌Nuclear Waste: Past releases caused high radioactivity and mutations.
❌Ocean Acidification: Reduced fish diversity and coral health.
❌Coral Bleaching: Linked to rising sea temperatures.
❌Crown-of-Thorns Sea Star: Outbreaks due to terrestrial runoff.
❌Plastic: 31 million tons entered oceans in 2014.
❌No-More-Sharks: Sharp decline in shark populations.
❌Invasive Species: Thrive in stressed ecosystems.
❌Aquaculture: Impacts coral reefs despite not depleting wild fish.
❌Land Reclamation: Destroys and homogenizes reefs.
❌Sea-Level Rise: From melting ice and thermal expansion.
❌Algal Reefs: Increased by poor water quality and loss of herbivores.

Cephalopods display a remarkable diversity on size and adaptations for locomotion.

These invertebrates are highly advanced and organised, so where and how do these invertebrates seek refuge?

🐙At muck diving sites like Lembeh and Anilao, critters like octopuses turn discarded bottles into homes.

🐙Coconut octopuses select discarded beer glasses as their homes.

🐙It is a lot easier for coconut octopuses to find empty shells to seek refuge than hollowed coconut shells.

Discover the incredible world of crustaceans

From crabs to mantis shrimp, these creatures are key players in the vast Arthropods phylum. Here's a glimpse into how they navigate hunting and defense in freshwater and marine habitats:

🦞Skeleton shrimp blend seamlessly with hydroids and algae for camouflage.
🦀Mantis shrimp wield specialized second legs for precision hunting.
🦞Bioluminescence in mantis shrimps serves as communication, hunting, and self-
defense.
