Hainanese approved!✊🏻 If you are enjoying Hokkien Mee at Swee Guan’s, you might wanna also head over to Kwong Satay, which is located to just a street away, and enjoy some lip smacking juicy Satay!
Kwong Satay has been around for more than 60 years, way back to those days where Mr Wong Chee Kwong’s grandfather peddled his trishaw and sell satay at Katong. Two decades later, Mr Wong took over and continued their family business at Geylang, with no change to their original recipe.
Kwong’s Satays are definitely more aromatic than others that I have tried elsewhere. This is my 3rd time coming back again, and their satay standard is still the same. Their satay are marinated with lot of ingredients such as Saffron (Yes you didn’t read wrongly, they are one of the rare stalls that uses Saffron), lemon grass, tumeric, candle nut, galangal, cumin, fennel, as well as cinnamon, star anise and nutmeg, while shallots and garlic are added for piquancy in the marinate mix.
For Satay gravy, in addition to peanuts; lemon grass, blue ginger, candle nuts, garlic and onions are added, brewed together with belachan, and finely grounded to a velvety blend. As this supposed to be a Hainanese recipe, they’ll usually top the satay sauce with a dollop of pineapple puree boiled with sugar, an Peranakan-inspired recipe which has a sweet yet zesty pineapple sauce blended into their peanut dip.
This time round, I ordered all pork belly satay. As always, nicely charred, juicy and succulent! Their pork belly satay is really a winner! Good fat to meat ratio, grilled to melt-in-your-mouth perfection! Pork, chicken, mutton satay are other satay options available but their pork belly satays still topped my choice. A bit more pricey but the portion is slightly bigger than the normal ones.
😋 Definitely worth a try if you haven’t!
