The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is a biennial international award that honours outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of liveable, vibrant and sustainable urban communities around the world. The Prize is awarded to cities and recognises their key leaders and organisations for displaying foresight, good governance and innovation in tackling the many urban challenges faced, to bring about social, economic and environmental benefits in a holistic way to their communities.

The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2020 was presented to the City of Vienna on 1 August 2022 by President Halimah Yacob. The Mayor and Governor of , Dr Michael Ludwig, received the Prize on behalf of the city at the Award Ceremony and Banquet held at the Istana.

The Special Mention cities - , and also received their certificates from Minister for National Development Desmond Lee.

The lack of an overall post-war planning strategy in led to a haphazard urban development especially in the neglected port areas of (pictured) and Quays.

The Strategic Spatial Plan approved in 2006 helped to reverse these conditions using the 'Slow Urbanism' approach through strategic interventions to tackle multiple issues such as climate change and affordable housing, with the flexibility to adapt and grow the city in an organic way.

Het Eilandje is today a lively urban quarter with a high quality of life.

Congratulations to Vienna for winning the the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2020!

Wien hat den Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize gewonnen. Der von Singapur alle 2 Jahre ausgelobte Preis würdigt herausragende Leistungen und Beiträge zur Schaffung lebenswerter, lebendiger und nachhaltiger urbaner Gemeinschaften auf der ganzen Welt. Bisherige Preisträger waren ua New York und Bilbao. Für mich als Bürgermeister ist eine so hohe internationale Auszeichnung ein zusätzlicher Ansporn unsere Wiener Klima Smart City Strategie weiterzuentwickeln und auszubauen. Soziale Innovation trifft hier auf ressourcenschonende Nachhaltigkeit - und damit bleiben wir die lebenswerteste Stadt der Welt.
